North Allegheny notebook: Preston Troiano earns medalist honor at golf qualifier

North Allegheny junior Preston Troiano shot a 1-under par 69 to take medalist honors at the Section 3-3A boys golf qualifier Sept. 16, at Slippery Rock Golf Club.

Troiano was one of five North Allegheny golfers to advance to the WPIAL individual championships. The WPIAL first round was to be held earlier this week at Southpointe Golf Club.

Senior Christopher Hoffman (71) finished second, followed by junior Ravi Desai (75) and junior Colin Ward (75) in a tie for third, and junior Liam Cooper (79) in 14th. Senior Charlie Burbick shot 81 and just missed reaching the target score of 80.

• The Tigers improved to 15-2 overall and 11-1 in section play Sept. 17 with a 175-205 win over New Castle. Hoffman shot 32 to lead the way.

Dings advances to WPIAL tournament

North Allegheny junior Kayli Dings fired a 74 to finish first at the Section 1-3A girls golf qualifier Sept. 17, at Strawberry Ridge Golf Course. She was the lone Tigers player to reach the target score of 87 to advance to the WPIAL tournament first round, which was to be held earlier this week at Willowbrook Country Club.

Omisa Shaw (90) took seventh and Kirsten Karlovits (91) was eighth at the qualifier.

Water polo teams compete in Erie

North Allegheny’s water polo teams took part in the Calvin Behm tournament at Cathedral Prep in Erie on Sept. 13-14. The NA boys finished 1-2 with an 11-5 win over Wissahiken and losses to Upper Dublin, 6-5, and North Penn, 7-5 in double overtime.

The NA girls also went 1-2 with an 8-7 victory over Wissahiken and losses to Upper Dublin, 11-4, and North Penn, 7-2.

The NA boys were led by Cody Currykosky, who had seven goals in the tournament, along with Tabari Morgan and Grant Regule, who had four apiece, Filip Malezanov with three and Mason Shantz, Bryce Miller and Callan Bunger with one each. Mike Stefanko made 27 saves.

For the NA girls, Bella Spino scored seven times, Tori Tieppo and Lily Tang each had three goals and Mikaela Dassanaike added a goal. Katherine Vales made 17 saves.

The teams then swept McDowell on Sept. 17 with the boys winning 17-12 and the girls scoring an 18-5 victory.

The girls were led by Spino with six goals, Tieppo with four, May Coffman with three, Lila Torchia with two and Dassanaike with one. Vales had seven saves.

For the boys, Morgan had five goals, Bunger scored four times, Logan Purnell and Miller had two each, and Malezanov scored once. Stefanko had 13 saves.

The NA boys are 7-2, while the girls are 4-4.

Football team stays unbeaten

Luke Rohan ran for three second-half touchdowns as top-ranked North Allegheny scored a 41-14 victory over No. 4 Hempfield (1-3, 0-1) on Sept. 13.

The Tigers improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The game was tied at 14 at halftime. Rogan Katchur scored on a 4-yard run, and Aidan Allison caught a 6-yard TD pass from Dominic Detruf for Hempfield.

NA boys soccer tops Seneca Valley

On Sept. 18, Nathan Katari scored twice, and Zach Nash and Caleb Rumberger added goals to lift North Allegheny’s boys soccer team to a 4-2 victory over Seneca Valley (6-4, 2-3).

The Tigers improved to 6-2-1 and 3-1 in Section 3-4A.

Tigers girls fall to Raiders

North Allegheny girls soccer fell to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in Section 3-4A after a 1-0 loss to Seneca Valley on Sept. 16.

Karly Majesky’s goal in the 51st minute help up for the Raiders (6-2, 3-0).

Slow-pitch softball sweeps Plum

The North Allegheny slow-pitch softball team improved to 3-3 with a sweep against Plum on Sept. 15.

The Tigers won 8-4 and 12-1.

Amara Daugherty, Claudia Kushon, Emily Marangoni (double) and Asha Vaders (2) and Olivia Klaich (double), Lily Daugherty (two-run triple) had RBIs in Game 1.

In Game 2, Emily Clark doubled in a run and hit a three-run inside-the-park homer, and Ella Mitchell, Lily Daugherty, Amara Daugherty (double), Vaders, Sobehart (2) and Marangoni also had RBIs.

NA’s Kaufman qualifies for WPIAL singles

North Allegheny’s Mia Kaufman qualified for the WPIAL singles tennis tournament after she finished third in the Section 2-3A tournament on Sept. 13.

After losing in the semifinals, Kaufman won the third-place match over Moon’s Kiera Wise, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

She lost to Mt. Lebanon’s Jackie Tang, 10-8, in the first round of the WPIAL singles tournament.

• The NA girls tennis team improved to 9-3 overall and 6-0 in section play with a 4-1 win over Seneca Valley on Sept. 16. Kaufman, Audrey Zheng and Kaitlyn Zeman won singles matches.

The doubles tandem of Remi Hayward and Kelly Tai also was victorious.

Tigers volleyball keeps rolling

North Allegheny’s girls volleyball team improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in Section 2-4A with a 3-1 win over Butler, 25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 25-21, on Sept. 18.

Molly Robertson had 22 kills, Alicia Mokube had 10 and Bridgit Murphy added six kills and three blocks. Keely McMahon-Regan had 19 assists, and Mack Jones had 17. Macey Casten added 18 digs.
