North Allegheny notebook: Tigers cross country teams off to strong start

North Allegheny’s boys and girls cross country teams opened the 2024 season with nonsection victories Sept. 3 against Peters Township.
The boys won 15-50, and the NA girls won 15-48.
For the girls, Elizabeth Pizon, Kendall Lucas, Camille Swirsding, Lydia Stuart and Tess Pagnotto were the top five finishers. Gabby Pizon and Abby Gordish were seventh and eighth, respectively.
In the boys race, NA was led by Andrew Peigh, Anthony Miklos, Tyler Davis, Greg Abel and Jackson Beemer in first to fifth place. Sebastian Klimchak and Grey Lowman finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Tigers slow-pitch splits with Bethel Park
North Allegheny’s slow-pitch softball got off to a 1-1 start to the season after splitting a series with Bethel Park on Sept. 1, at Marshall Middle School.
The Tigers fell to Bethel Park, 19-3, in the first game and won the second 7-6.
Senior Emily Marangoni was 4 for 6 in the series with three singles and a double. Sophomore Lily Daugherty was 4 for 7.

NA boys golfers lower record
The North Allegheny boys golf team fired another school record score Sept. 3 in a 167-214 victory over Knoch at North Park. Colin Ward shot 5-under par 31 to lead the Tigers, followed by Ravi Desai (32), Chris Hoffman (34), Preston Troiano (34) and Liam Cooper (36).
The victory helped the Tigers improve to 11-1 overall and 8-0 in section play.
North Allegheny volleyball moves to 2-0
North Allegheny’s girls volleyball team scored a 3-0 nonsection win over Shaler on Sept. 3, with game scores of 25-13, 25-21 and 25-19.
Molly Robertson had 10 kills, and Hannah DeLucia added five kills. Keely McMahon-Reagan had 15 assists and three aces, and Alicia Mokube had three blocks as NA improved to 2-0.
Tigers shut out North Hills
North Allegheny’s girls soccer team won its Section 3-4A opener Sept. 4 with a 6-0 victory over North Hills.
Emma Schupansky scored twice, and Maddie Miller, Bella Montgomery, Rowan Barsotti and Averie Bierker added goals for the Tigers. Maggie Nestor earned her second shutout of the season as North Allegheny improved to 2-1 overall.
NA field hockey falls to Lebo
The North Allegheny field hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to Mt. Lebanon in its Section 1-3A opener on Sept. 3.
Mia Brinkley and Josie Schomburg scored, and Kayla Joyce made 12 saves for the Tigers (1-2, 0-1).
Football team tops Gateway
Class 6A No. 1 North Allegheny (2-0) outgained Class 5A Gateway (0-2), 390 yards to 161 yards, in a 42-7 nonconference win over Gateway on Aug. 30.
Peter Notaro kicked field goals of 52 and 18 yards for North Allegheny while the Tigers defense scored on a fumble recovery by Declan Flaherty and a safety.
Kyle Langdon, Brady Brinkley, Jackson Failla and Dylan Brokos also scored touchdowns.
Failla completed 5 of 13 passes for 96 yards and a TD. Brinkley led the rushing effort with seven carries for 74 yards. James Donaldson had three catches for 75 yards.
Girls tennis sweeps Mars
North Allegheny’s girls tennis team pushed its record to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in section matches with a 5-0 win over Mars on Sept. 3.
Mia Kaufman, Audrey Zheng and Kaitlyn Zeman won singles matches in straight sets, and the doubles teams of Cynthia Li/Alexa Richey and Kelly Tai/Ella Mangene also were victorious.
