North Allegheny notebook: Tigers split at opening tournament

North Allegheny’s girls soccer team got off to a high-scoring start to the season.

The Tigers defeated Altoona, 7-0, in the season-opener Aug. 23, at NA Intermediate High School.

Bella Montgomery scored twice, and Rowan Barsotti, Addison Heim, Luciana Zagacki, Mia Bosley and Mia Barsotti added goals.

Margaret Nestor earned the shutout in goal.

The next day, the Tigers lost 2-1 to Cumberland Valley at Newman Stadium.

Emma Schupansky scored for NA on a penalty kick.

Tigers tie Plum on pitch

Noah Hutter scored off a pass from Leonardo Yu in the 13th minute as North Allegheny played to a 1-1 draw with Plum in a nonsection boys soccer match Aug. 27, at Plum.

Xavier Zyskowski and Emiliano Perin combined for 11 saves for the Tigers (1-1-1).

Boys golfers fire low score

The North Allegheny boys golf team went real low to defeat New Castle on Aug. 28 at Sylvan Heights Golf Course. The Tigers won 169-222 to post their lowest score in at least 21 years.

Preston Troiano shot 4-under par 32, and Ravi Desai, Colin Ward and Charlie Burbick each shot 34. Chris Hoffman added a 35, and Mike Huet shot 38 as North Allegheny moved to 9-1 overall and 6-0 in section matches.

Girls golf edges Pine-Richland

North Allegheny’s girls golf team improved to 7-1 overall and 6-0 in section play with a victory over Pine-Richland on Aug. 28 at Diamond Run Golf Course.

With the match tied at 194, North Allegheny won a one-hole playoff to secure the victory. Kayli Dings and Omisa Shah played the extra hole. Dings eagled, and Shah bogeyed for a two-stroke win. Dings shot 37 to lead the Tigers.

NA field hockey victorious

The North Allegheny field hockey team topped Fox Chapel, 2-1, on Aug. 26.

Ryann Snowden and Mia Brinkley scored for the Tigers (1-1). Josie Schomberg had an assist.

Emma Srodes scored for Fox Chapel in the final minute.

Girls tennis edges USC

North Allegheny’s girls tennis team moved to 3-2 overall after a 3-2 win over Upper St. Clair on Aug. 27.

Mia Kaufman won 6-3, 7-5 at first singles, and the doubles teams of Cynthia Li/Alexa Richey and Remi Hayward/Medha Thiramala won three-set doubles matches.

NA football tops St. Frances

North Allegheny’s football team opened the season Aug. 23 with a 22-20 victory over St. Frances Regional Academy (Md.). The Defending WPIAL Class 6A champion Tigers (1-0) got touchdowns from Brady Brinkley, Colman Craft and Liam Flaherty.

Jackson Failla completed 3 of 8 passes for 32 yards. Brinkley ran for 56 yards, and Luke Rohan ran for 55 yards. Craft caught two passes for 40 yards. Peter Notaro, an Alabama recruit, added a 40-yard field goal.

In a key play in the first half, Logan Hughey recovered a muffed punt that led to Flaherty’s 3-yard TD run.

On defense, Kyle Langdon made eight tackles, including three for a loss.
