North Allegheny notebook: Tigers volleyball among top-ranked teams

North Allegheny’s boys volleyball team is off to a strong start to the season in its quest to add to its WPIAL-leading total of district titles (22).

The Tigers are ranked second in the latest Western Pa. Volleyball Coaches poll behind defending WPIAL champion Shaler, which ended North Allegheny’s run of five straight WPIAL titles.

The Tigers reached the semifinals of their host tournament on March 23.

North Allegheny went 6-2 in pool play and then beat Peters Township in the quarterfinals. The Tigers lost to Central York in the semifinals.

Central York went on to defeat Manheim Central in the finals.

For NA, Stone Gaertner had 25 kills, Will Robertson added 22 kills, and setter Nicolas Carioto had 61 assists.

North Allegheny opens the Section 2-3A schedule against Butler on Thursday (April 4) at 7 p.m.

NA tennis on a roll

North Allegheny’s boys tennis team is off to a 7-0 start after defeating Mars, 5-0, on March 25.

Advaita Sircar, Srivatsav Thirumala and Utkarsh Tiwari earned singles victories in straight sets. Adithya Ramadas Guptha/Adhav Ramadas and Amit Bhandari/Shivum Telang won doubles matches for the Tigers.

Baseball team routes Central

J.D. Costanzo and Charles Mau had two hits apiece and David Posey drove in two runs for North Allegheny in a 10-3 nonsection win over Central Catholic on March 25.

The Tigers improved to 2-0. Their section opener is April 8 against Butler at 7 p.m.

Softball drops section opener

Top-ranked Hempfield blanked No. 5 North Allegheny, 6-0, on March 25 in the Class 6A softball opener.

The teams split their section series last year.

North Allegheny, which made three errors and had three wild pitches in the third inning, had runners in scoring position with two outs in the second, third and fourth innings but couldn’t get a run across.

Senior Carlyn Vaupel had two hits for the Tigers, whose opener against Fox Chapel was postponed.

Dopirak commits to Dickinson

North Allegheny senior basketball player Joey Dopirak announced he plans to continue his career at Division III Dickinson College in Carlisle.

Dopirak, a 6-foot-5 guard/forward, was an all-section selection this season after averaging 21.4 points and 6.7 rebounds for the Tigers.

He also surpassed 1,000 career points.

North Allegheny finished 11-12 overall after falling to Baldwin in the WPIAL quarterfinals.

Rumpler honored by Trib HSSN

North Allegheny senior wrestler Leyna Rumpler was selected to the inaugural Trib HSSN girls wrestling all-star team.

Rumpler finished with a 35-2 record this season after capturing WPIAL and Western Regional titles and finishing as the PIAA runner-up at 155 pounds.

She had a career record of 102-20.

Canon-McMillan senior Valarie Solorio, an Iowa recruit, was named the Trib HSSN girls wrestler of the year.
