The more things change in high school sports, the more they stay the same, especially when it comes to the chase for the Trib Cup in Class 6A.
North Allegheny wins again.
The Tigers are 9 for 9 in Class 6A Trib Cups and remain perfect with 22 Sports Cup in 22 years of the competition.
“We are very proud of the award and what it stands for,” North Allegheny athletic director Bob Bozzuto said. “Winning the Trib Cup is one of our goals each year. We do not take the challenge of representing 6A lightly. We are honored to have won this award ever since year one.”
The dynasty continued as North Allegheny cruised to the Class 6A championship this past school year, once again eclipsing the 1,000-point mark and doubling the score of runner-up Mt. Lebanon.
The Trib Cup is a yearlong competition in 25 team sports to determine the top WPIAL program in each classification. Schools earn points for section or conference championships, WPIAL playoff berths and district postseason success, state playoff berths and PIAA championships.
North Allegheny sports programs earned points in a record-tying 24 of the 25 sports in the competition while Mt. Lebanon was second, scoring points in 18 sports.
“We have a dedicated group of student-athletes, coaches, parents and outstanding support from central administration and the school board,” Bozzuto said. “Tiger Nation is strong and alive, as we prepare for the many challenges that lie ahead for us.”
The Tigers enjoyed championship runs in six sports, including boys and girls volleyball, boys and girls swimming, boys golf and girls cross country.
North Allegheny also claimed PIAA titles in girls volleyball, boys golf and boys swimming.
“These teams had an outstanding positive team culture and worked relentlessly for their championships,” Bozzuto said. “Our teams are mentally and physically prepared for these challenges. Our coaching staff and team did a wonderful job with many lifelong memories. The belief is ‘we and us’ and not ‘I and me.’”
With the across-the-board success of every athletic team at North Allegheny, there are so many wonderful moments packed into the fall, winter and spring sports seasons, both on and off the playing fields.
“Each year we are faced with new challenges and adversity,” Bozzuto said. “Our positive outlook and dedication towards achieving the ultimate goal in developing our student-athletes academically, athletically and psychologically in an enriching culture. The bond and relationships created over the year with our students-athletes, coaches, administration and community is what is cherished most as we strive for a tradition of excellence.”
Mt. Lebanon once again tasted district gold in boys and girls lacrosse along with girls tennis to finish in second place behind North Allegheny in the 6A Trib Cup chase for a fourth straight year.
Rounding out the exact same top five as last year is Norwin in third place, Seneca Valley in fourth and the combination of Central Catholic/Oakland Catholic in fifth place.
