North Allegheny’s Wrigley, CV’s Porter aim to defend girls golf titles

• Scouting the Class AAA field: Caroline Wrigley of North Allegheny is back to defend her WPIAL title after shooting 75 to win at Treesdale a year ago. … Wrigley should have strong pursuers in Pine-Richland junior Lauren Freyvogel, Mars senior Natalie Welsh, North Allegheny junior Christina Lewis and Canon-McMillan senior Taylor Waller. … Welsh shot 2-under-par 70 to win the Section 1-AAA title at Conley's Resort. Freyvogel and Wrigley each shot 1-under at sectionals. … Other section champs in the 21-player field include Uniontown junior Danae Rugola and Oakland Catholic junior Jessica Meyers. … Westmoreland County has four representatives: Hempfield senior Taylor Short, Franklin Regional senior Jocelyn Behr and Penn-Trafford freshman Lauren Barber and senior teammate Anna Stowers, the WCCA champion.

•Scouting the Class AA field: Junior Kiaria Porter of Central Valley returns to defend her title in a compact, 11-player field. She shot 78 to win last year at Treesdale. … Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic junior Maddie Smithco finished tied for second last year, and Sewickley Academy junior Tatem McKelvey, the Section 2 champ, was fourth. … Greensburg Central Catholic junior Abby Zambruno, who finished sixth last year, is a strong contender, as well. Her sister, Olivia, now at Penn State, won two WPIAL titles and three straight PIAA titles.

• Who advances? The top eight finishers in Class AA and the top seven in Class AAA move on to the PIAA Western Regional Oct. 16 at Tom's Run Golf Course in Blairsville. Five other districts also will have players in the regional. The top 11 at the regional in both classes will advance to the PIAA championships Oct. 23-24 in York.

• Groupings to watch: The first AAA group out, at 8:30 a.m., has Welsh, Freyvogel and Wrigley. Rugola, Seneca Valley senior Kennedy Johnston and Lewis follow at 8:38.
