The North Hills boys soccer team is off to a strong start in 2025.

The Indians, following a loss in their second game, had not lost another game through Sept. 9, sitting with a record of 6-1-1 through the team’s first eight contests.

Defense has paced the group. Outside of a 4-0 loss to Plum on Aug. 23, the Indians had surrendered just five goals in their other seven matches.

Included in the North Hills’ impressive nonsection slate has been a 2-1 win over Upper St. Clair, a quarterfinalist in Class 4A last season.

The Indians also have a 5-0 win over Penn Hills, a 3-2 victory over Connellsville, a 1-0 triumph over a 3A quarterfinalist from 2024 in Hampton and a victory over a Class 2A program in Deer Lakes that made the WPIAL semifinals in 2024.

Tyler Myers has paced the Indians’ offensive attack, scoring both goals — including the overtime winner — against the Lancers.

In section play, North Hills played to a 1-1 tie with rival North Allegheny, a 4A semifinalist a year ago, and picked up a 3-0 win at Butler.

A year ago, North Hills finished 11-9 overall with a 4-6 record in Section 3-4A. In the postseason, the Indians topped Norwin, 3-2, in the first round. They bowed out of the playoffs via a 1-0 loss to North Allegheny in the quarterfinals.

Like the boys, the North Hills girls soccer team got off to an encouraging start with wins in its first two games — a 2-1 win over Armstrong and a 3-0 victory over Hempfield.

But the North Hills offense sputtered in the following week with consecutive 4-0 losses to section rival North Allegheny and nonsection foe Freeport. A 1-0 loss to Allderdice followed, putting North Hills at a 2-3 record through its first five games.

Indians football tested

On the football field, North Hills has gotten off to a slow start under interim coach Brody Zangaro.

The Indians fell in their first three games of the season, with a pair of tight defeats.

Hempfield dropped the Indians, 28-23, in their Week Zero opener. A Week 1 matchup with Seneca Valley got away from the Indians in a 38-10 loss.

But North Hills kept its Week 2 contest close with its best defensive showing of the season. However, a late touchdown by Mars handed the Indians a 13-10 loss.

The Indians have received some strong individual performances, with quarterback Kelly McCarthy passing for four touchdowns in the first three weeks. Wide receiver/defensive back Johnell Edison has excelled on both sides of the ball, scoring on both a reception and an interception in Week Zero.

Zangaro is filling in for longtime Indians coach Pat Carey, who is recovering from health issues.

The road ahead won’t be much easier for North Hills, which hosts Class 5A favorite Pine-Richland in Week 3 and travels to surprising Fox Chapel in Week 4. The two weeks that follow will feature a pair of 2-1 opponents in Norwin and Plum.
