Norwin notebook: Cross country teams place at states

Norwin came home from Hershey with more than candy wrappers.

For the first time, the Knights boys and girls cross country teams qualified for the PIAA championships.

The girls placed sixth on the 3.2-mile course with 196 points, led by Annie Czajkowski, who placed 24th individually.

The boys team, fresh off their first WPIAL championship since 1977, took 12th in their first state finals trip since 2005.

Thomas Gaydos was the top finisher for the Knights, taking 34th in 16:56.

Silberman commits

Norwin senior shortstop Nate Silberman announced a verbal commitment to Seton Hill baseball. Last season, he his .392 with 12 runs, 12 RBI with a .900 OPS.

Football

Duquesne: Grad linebacker Gianni Rizzo collected six tackles as the Dukes took down Mercyhurst, 31-24.

Women’s cross country

St. Francis (Pa.): Freshman Rosemary Gaydos was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year. Gaydos placed 19th at the conference championships in Connecticut, breaking the 19-minute mark for the first time at 18:52.2.

Women’s soccer

Youngstown State: Junior Emma Rigone scored a goal as the Penguins (5-11-2, 3-7 Horizon League) wrapped up the regular season with a 3-1 win against Robert Morris.

Women’s swimming

Clarion: Senior Jordan Kutchak was on the 400-yard relay that finished second in 4:12.02 in a 136-50 win over Shippensburg.
