The Norwin boys and girls cross country teams captured championships at the Blue Devil Invitational at Buhl Park in Sharon.

The boys blew past second-place Lakeview by 72 points (61 to 133) as Thomas Gaydos took first place with a time of 16 minutes, 12 seconds.

Luke Simpson was fifth in 16:53.

The girls collected 55 points to pull past Latrobe (87). Annie Czajkowski took third in 19:05, Addison Farrah finished sixth in 20:03, and Jillian Ryba was seventh in 20:06.

Knights win fourth

The Norwin girls soccer team reached four wins, the same amount it had all of last season, in a 4-1 victory over Woodland Hills.

Lindsay Reese, Hannah Amantea, Gigi Fuchel and Julia Bursick all scored for the Knights, who followed with a 2-2 draw against Hampton in a nonsection game to move to 4-5-1 overall and 3-2 in Section 1-4A.

Norwin had outscored its opponents, 29-13.

First-place showdown

Norwin’s boys soccer team took a four-game winning streak into a first-place matchup with Plum in Section 1-4A.

Plum, though, held back the Knights for a 3-2 win despite two goals from senior Daniel Maddock.

Plum had shut out four straight opponents.

Knights sophomore keeper Reed Hoyle made six saves.

Norwin, the defending WPIAL champion, moved to 6-4 overall and 4-1 in section.

Earlier, Norwin posted a 2-0 shutout of Penn Hills on senior night as Dylan Moyer and Alex Krance found the back of the net.

Football falls

Norwin was set to play its fourth home game in six weeks, but the Knights looked to snap a three-game losing streak after a 42-14 loss to No. 1 North Allegheny.

They had a 14-8 lead after the first quarter, but didn’t score again as the Tigers scored 28 unanswered points. Tristyn Tavares ran for 126 yards and two scores, including an 80-yard burst in the loss.

Vilage drops opener

Bayleigh Vilage bowed out early at the WPIAL Class 3A tennis singles championship, but it’s a safe bet she will be back: Vilage is a freshman.

Vilage dropped 10-1 decition to Bethel Park sophomore Cami Fisher in the first round of the tournament at North Allegheny.

Vilage finished fourth in the Section 1 tournament to qualify for the WPIAL finals.
