Pitt picked up a commitment from one of the state’s top distance runners as Norwin senior Annie Czajkowski pledged to the Panthers for track and cross country.
Czajkowski chose Pitt over other offers from Rutgers, Delaware and Duquesne. She also talked to Penn State and Georgia.
Her brother, Noah, is a pitcher on the Pitt baseball team.
“Pitt was the best fit for me,” she said. “The team, coach and school all were amazing. My faith is a huge part of why I run, and I felt very connected with my faith there. The proximity to home is so nice. I felt at home there.”
At the next level, Czajkowski hopes to run the 5K and 10K and compete in cross country.
She won a pair of cross country races this season: the PIAA Foundation Meet in Hershey and the Westmoreland County Coaches Association Championship in Youngwood.
She owns the school record with a time of 17 minutes, 52.9 seconds. She is the first girl in program history to break the 18-minute mark.
She is the top scorer for the unbeaten Norwin girls, who are favored to win a WPIAL title next week and compete for a PIAA championship in a few weeks. The team hasn’t lost a section race since 2021.
Czajkowski took fifth in the WPIAL indoor Class 3A 3,200-meter run and was eighth in the open 1,600. She ran a time of 10 minutes, 32 seconds to set a school record in the 3,200.
At last year’s outdoor track championships, she was a runner-up in the 1,600 and 3,200 and took fifth in the 3,200 at the PIAA meet.
