Notable changes to the 2024-25 WPIAL field hockey alignment

The WPIAL released new section alignments for the next two-year cycle in all sports, and changes will be implemented starting this fall. This summer, the Tribune-Review will break down changes for each of the WPIAL sports.

Here’s a look at the upcoming WPIAL girls field hockey season.

2023 WPIAL champions

3A: Pine-Richland

2A: Penn-Trafford

A: Shady Side Academy

Notable changes

• The total number of teams dropped from 16 to 15.

• Class 3A fell from seven to five total teams. Peters Township dropped down to Class 2A, and Allderdice dropped out of the WPIAL competition for the next two seasons. The Dragons went 1-11 last year.

• In 2A, Peters Township joins Fox Chapel, Latrobe, Penn-Trafford and Upper St. Clair

• The Oakland Catholic Eagles moved down to Class A for the upcoming two seasons, joining Aquinas Academy, The Ellis School, Shady Side Academy and Winchester Thurston.
