Notable changes to the 2024-25 WPIAL girls tennis alignment

The WPIAL released new section alignments for the next two-year cycle in all sports, and changes will be implemented starting this fall.
This summer, TribLive will break down changes for each of the WPIAL sports.
Here’s a look at the upcoming WPIAL girls tennis season.
2023 WPIAL champions
WPIAL 3A singles champion: Meriwether McCargo, Shady Side Academy
WPIAL 3A doubles champions: Cami Fisher/Lily Sierka, Bethel Park
WPIAL 3A team champion: Bethel Park
WPIAL 2A singles champion: Gabriella Dusi, Belle Vernon
WPIAL 2A doubles champions: Emily Greb/Lindsey Greb, Knoch
WPIAL 2A team champion: Knoch
Notable changes
WPIAL girls tennis gained three more teams, going from 72 to 75.
• Class 3A went from 34 to 36 total teams.
Section 1 remains the same, and Section 2 remained relatively similar, adding only Montour, which moved up from Class 2A.
In Section 3, Oakland Catholic dropped to Class 2A and McKeesport joined.
Chartiers Valley also moved up from Class 2A and joins Section 4.
• Class 2A went from 37 teams to 39.
Section 1 stayed relatively the same except for the addition of Burrell, which moved from Section 3.
Oakland Catholic joined Section 2 from 3A, and Winchester Thurston came over from Section 5.
Section 3 added two new teams: Indiana from Section 1 and newcomer Springdale.
Lincoln Park, an independent the past two seasons, joins Section 4.
Sewickley Academy joined Section 5 from Section 4, along with newcomer Aquinas Academy.
New teams
Three teams joined the fold this season.
McKeesport joined Section 3-3A, kicking off its first girls tennis season in the WPIAL.
Springdale will be welcomed to Section 3-2A by A-K Valley neighbors Highlands and Riverview.
Aquinas Academy will be part of the seven team Section 5-2A.
