Emma DiRocco feels most comfortable playing middle blocker. The 6-foot-2 senior for the Fox Chapel girls volleyball team is asked to do much more than that.
DiRocco is the most experienced player on a Foxes’ roster that is filled with young players. During Fox Chapel’s Section 4-4A opening loss against Shaler last Tuesday, DiRocco led the Foxes with six kills and three blocks.
DiRocco, who recently committed to play volleyball at Division I Old Dominion (Va.), said she is happy to help this roster with whatever is needed.
“It’s definitely different, but I’m always up for the challenge,” DiRocco said. “I really love being a leader because I’m able to mentor the young girls and teach them the ways of a higher level. It’s nice giving them tips and seeing how they improve over the season.”
Fox Chapel (0-2, 0-1) was hit hard by graduation from last season. The Foxes reached the WPIAL playoffs before bowing out in the first round to Upper St Clair.
Fox Chapel coach Diana Andreyko knew that she was going to lean on DiRocco to help in a variety of roles.
“I’m sure you saw today that pretty much every ball she touches, it’s a conversion for a point or a block,” Andreyko said. “I asked if she wants to play all around. She’s a versatile player and she is capable of passing, playing defense and everything.”
DiRocco, who plays volleyball for Pittsburgh Elite, plays the sport year round.
She said she is able to balance everything and not worry about burnout.
“It’s very busy, but it’s doable,” DiRocco said. “I’m doing a lot of work on the road all the time. I’ve traveled to Kentucky, Florida and around the nation. Prioritizing organization is huge, but I’ve gotten a lot better at it throughout the years.”
DiRocco was picked as an all-section player during her sophomore and junior seasons. When it came to selecting a college, DiRocco felt best when she visited Old Dominion, which competes in the Sun Belt Conference.
“It was the coaches that were the main thing for me,” DiRocco said. “They were so friendly. Also, the girls there who went on my official visit were amazing.”
DiRocco is hoping to help to bring this younger lineup to the standard to make the playoffs again. Fox Chapel is in a section with Armstrong, Kiski Area, Penn Hills, Shaler and Woodland Hills.
The Foxes will need to improve on getting into system on offense. During their match with the Titans, Fox Chapel had 12 kills and 13 attack errors.
“Communication is the biggest thing,” DiRocco said. “Without that, nothing can really happen.”
