The Penn Hills boys basketball team saw its season come to an end on the road at Peters Township. The Indians, who were the No. 11 seed, had a hard time scoring consistently during a 63-30 first-round loss Feb. 18.
Calix Clark and Amon Hawthorne tied for a team-high six points in the loss, which was a rematch of the 2023 WPIAL Class 5A championship game. The Indians wrapped up the season with a 12-10 record. Clark and Hawthorne were both selections to the all-section first team.
Ruperto hits times
Serra Catholic sophomore Emily Ruperto demonstrated her versatility in the pool throughout the season. Ruperto, a Penn Hills resident, hit the WPIAL Class 2A qualifying times for every individual event.
Ruperto is hoping to improve on an already strong start to her career. She qualified for the PIAA Class 2A championships last season in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.
Hoolahan makes adjustment
Luke Hoolahan’s first year on the Carlow men’s volleyball team turned out to be a productive one. During the first week of February, Hoolahan nearned the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Hoolahan earned the honors by recording 19 digs during the Cougars’ win over Mount Aloysius. Hoolahan has finished with 10 or more digs in three of Carlow’s matches so far this season.
Oliver earns honors
A four-game winning streak to end the season didn’t help the Penn Hills’ girls basketball team find a way to the Class 5A playoffs, but the Indians built some confidence during a season where they finished 7-15.
Penn Hills guard Milani Oliver was given second-team all-section honors.
McIntyre shines
Indians sprinter Mackenzie McIntyre took second in the 60-meter dash at TSTCA Meet No. 5 at Edinboro. McIntyre finished in 7.98 seconds. McIntyre also finished third in the 200 meters with a time of 26.34.
Penn Hills had several top five finishers. Tymere Alston finished fourth in the 200 dash with a time of 52.91. Isaiah Petty-Allen placed fifth in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 7 inches.
