Penn-Trafford, Belle Vernon stars, 3 doubles teams still in hunt for state tennis titles

Penn-Trafford’s Mia Williams, Belle Vernon’s Gabby Dusi and three doubles teams from the WPIAL are still in the hunt for gold after the first day of the PIAA tennis championships Friday in Hershey.

Williams, the WPIAL runner-up, knocked out a pair of district champs Friday. She beat Alexandria Warsing of Parkland in District 11 in the first round, 6-2, 6-3, then followed with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Grace Liu of Fairview in District 10 in the quarterfinals.

She’ll face the defending state champion in the semifinals Saturday: Addison Lindsay of Central Mountain.

In Class 2A singles, Dusi, the WPIAL champion, rolled through her first two opponents, beating Evyennia Raudenbush of Big Spring, 6-3, 6-1, and District 12 champ Medina Yuldasheva of Constitution, 6-2, 6-1.

She’ll meet District 10 champion Paige Patsy of Cathedral Prep in Saturday’s semifinals.

In Class 3A doubles, both WPIAL finalists advanced to the semifinals.

WPIAL champs Mt. Lebanon’s Jackie Tang and Michelle Yang beat Landisville Hempfield’s Priya Christman and Kiana Nguyen, 6-2, 6-0, then finished off Mahi Patel and Joya Mentrikoski from Downingtown East, 6-3, 7-6 (1).

Runners-up Brooke Henderson and Alexandra Merkel of Shady Side Academy beat District 11 champs Sonia Lee and Sadie Pollard of Parkland, 6-0, 6-2, then advanced to the semifinals when Disrtict 10 champs Vivian Liu and Mackenzee Jewell of Fairview retired due to injury.

In Class 2A doubles, WPIAL champions Veronica Zinski and Marann Buckanovich of Winchester Thurston won two matches decisively. They defeated Mia Schreader and April Schreader of Camp Hill, 6-0, 6-2, and Zoe Grill and Kate Dunn of Central, 6-2, 6-0.
