Penn-Trafford notebook: Distance runner Jake McGhee turns in record performance

Penn-Trafford senior Jake McGhee turned in quite a performance at the 51st annual Baldwin Invitational.

McGhee won prestigious McKinney Mile, and he broke the Penn-Trafford school record in the process.

He won the marquee race named in honor of Baldwin’s former coach. McGhee won in 4 minutes, 15.71 seconds. Norwin’s Luke Simpson took third in 4:18.85.

McGhee finished third in the 2-mile run in a time of 9:43.89.

McGhee is one of the top distance runners in the WPIAL.

P-T girls seeded No. 1

The WPIAL released pairings for the Class 5A softball playoffs May 8 and the Penn-Trafford girls were the No. 1 seed.

The Warriors (17-1, 12-0) are riding a 17-game winning streak. Their only loss was to Class 6A No. 1 Hempfield, 8-3, on March 14.

They own nonsection wins over Thomas Jefferson, North Hills, Shaler and Connellsville, all Class 5A playoff teams.

The Warriors were scheduled to face No. 16 Moon on May 12 at West Mifflin in the first round.

If they won, they would play the winner of the No. 8 Plum/No. 9 Chartiers Valley game in the quarterfinals.

P-T baseball finishes 2nd

Penn-Trafford baseball coach Lou Cortazzo predicted before the season that the Section 1-5A title would come down to the final week of the season, and it did.

An early season loss to Armstrong prevented the Warriors from winning the section title. The Warriors (14-5, 10-2) finished a game behind Plum (15-2, 11-1).

The Warriors, the reigning WPIAL champions, have won eight consecutive games.

Cortazzo said he was pleased with how the team was playing down the stretch and is ready to defend the WPIAL title.
