Penn-Trafford notebook: Nick Turowski sparks WVU to win at Nemacolin

Penn-Trafford grad and West Virginia sophomore Nick Turowski helped the Mountaineer golf team to a tournament victory.
Turowski finished third overall, shooting an 8-under par 208, as the Mountaineers won the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational at Mystic Rock Golf Course in Farmington on Sept. 27-29.
The Harrison City native had rounds of 73, 66 and 69. It was his third top 5 finish in a row.
Teammate Kaleb Wilson was the overall winner at 11-under 205.
WVU finished 38-under, 18 shots better the Western Carolina, in the second annual tournament.
Yacamelli runs wild
Sophomore quarterback Cody Yacamelli scored four touchdowns and rushed for 115 yards to lead Penn-Trafford to a 33-14 win against Plum in a nonconference battle. Jack Miller booted a 21-yard field goal, and the defense recorded a safety.
Senior quarterback Nate Desmond completed 7 of 13 passes for 96 yards.
The win left the Warriors 5-1, 1-1 in the Class 5A Big East Conference.
PT girls lead section
The Penn-Trafford girls’ volleyball team remains atop the Section 3-4A standings at 4-0.
The Warriors are ahead of Hempfield (4-1) and Norwin (2-1).
They own a 3-2 win against Latrobe and a 3-1 victory against Hempfield.
The Warriors were scheduled to visit Latrobe on Oct. 2 and host Hempfield on Oct. 7 and Plum on Oct. 9.
PT golfers end season
The Penn-Trafford boys and girls golf teams had disappointing seasons in the standings.
The boys finished 4-8 in the section, which was won by Latrobe, and the girls finished 4-8 in the section, which was won by Elizabeth Forward.
Doubles team falls
The Penn-Trafford doubles team of sophomore Elle Lejeune and senior Annabella Aquino, the section winner, dropped their first-round match in the WPIAL Class 3A tournament on Oct. 1.
They lost a hard-fought 10-8 decision to Upper St. Clair duo of junior Catalina Ramierz and sophomore Leila Harnade.
The USC duo finished in fourth place.
Field hockey seeks strong finish
The Penn-Trafford field hockey team (3-6-2, 1-6-1) can still qualify for the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs, but it needs to finish strong.
The Warriors recently dropped a 4-3 decision to Fox Chapel.
They have key matches against Latrobe (Oct. 9) and Upper St. Clair (Oct. 15).
