Dylan Grabowski is having a strong season at Patrick & Henry Community College, both at the plate and on the mound.
The 2023 Penn-Trafford grad, who signed on to continue his career next season at Division I Liberty, is batting .425 with 48 hits, 38 runs scored, 12 doubles, two triples, eight home runs and 58 RBIs in 35 games. He has 18 steals in 19 attempts.
On the hill, he is 3-1 with an earned run average of 2.08. In 26 innings, he struck out 33 and allowed 16 hits.
As a freshman, Grabowski batted .425, scored 32 runs, and had 40 hits, nine doubles, two triples and nine home runs. He was 8-3 on the mound with a 4.92 earned run average and struck out 57 in 56 2/3 innings.
Grabowski was the 2023 TribLive Westmoreland player of the year.
Haynes stays hot at Seton Hill
Jakob Haynes, also a 2023 Penn-Trafford grad, continued his hot hitting for Seton Hill.
The redshirt sophomore is hitting .352 with 31 hits, seven doubles, 10 home runs and 22 RBIs.
The Griffins are 23-7 overall and 9-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division, a half-game behind Cal, Pa. (22-5, 9-2).
The two teams battled for first place April 11-12.
P-T splits with Plum
The Penn-Trafford baseball team split a two-game series with Plum last week in Section 1-5A.
The Warriors defeated the Mustangs, 5-2, after falling 4-1 on April 7.
Penn-Trafford (6-4, 4-2) will have three nonsection games before returning to section play April 22-23 against Penn Hills.
Penn-Trafford was to host Trinity on April 14 and Hempfield on April 17 before traveling to North Allegheny on April 19.
Franklin Regional (7-1, 4-0) leads the section followed by Latrobe (7-3, 4-2) and Plum (7-2, 3-1).
Warriors on top
The Penn-Trafford softball team extended its winning streak to five games after defeating Latrobe (5-3, 2-1) on April 9.
When Giuliana Youngo saw Cam Ponko’s home run sail over the fence in center field, she wanted in on the action.
“When one of us starts hitting, it makes everyone else better,” Youngo said. “We focus a lot on our hitting.”
Ponko and Youngo, both seniors, blasted back-to-back solo shots in the top of the fifth inning to power top-ranked Penn-Trafford to a 4-2 victory over Latrobe in Section 2-5A softball at Graham-Sobota Field.
The Warriors (5-1, 2-0) have key wins over Thomas Jefferson, Shaler, North Hills, Armstrong and, now, Latrobe.
“Our mindset is the same every game,” said Ponko, an IUP commit. “We treat it as just another game. Our power and contact are very good.”
Ponko, who collided with a fence down the third-base line trying make a catch late in the game, opened the fifth with a blast to straightaway center, and her second homer of the season gave the Warriors a 3-2 edge.
Before Ponko settled back into the dugout, Youngo launched a towering shot of her own over the same spot in center — her first of the season — to give the Warriors a two-run advantage.
“Hitting is contagious,” Penn-Trafford coach Denny Little said. “Cam hit one out … (Youngo) is a good line-drive hitter, but she got a hold of one. They were only solo homers, but they were big. I see they moved the fences back, but it didn’t help.”
