Derek Carr and Kylie Anthony are this year’s candidates from Penn-Trafford for the Westmoreland County Scholar/Athlete Excellence Award.

The duo are outstanding athletes and solid students.

Carr played football and basketball for the Warriors. He ranked 47th of 303 in his class with a 4.2 cumulative GPA.

Anthony played volleyball and softball. She ranked 67th with a 4.1 GPA.

The banquet, sponsored by Judge Michael Stewart, will be held May 7 at Ferranti’s Lakeview in Hempfield.

P-T dumps Armstrong

Penn-Trafford (4-1, 1-0) opened Section 1-5A action on March 31 with a 7-2 victory against Armstrong, ending the River Hawks’ four-game winning streak and extending its own winning streak to four games.

Penn-Trafford came out swinging. The Warriors pounded out 13 hits, including three by Rilie Moors (two singles and a double).

They also got a solid pitching performance from sophomore Allyson Paulone and solid defense.

Paulone, who was the losing pitcher in the WPIAL playoff game against Armstrong in 2024, said she was eager to face them.

She allowed six hits, no walks and fanned three.

“I made a few adjustments,” Paulone said. “It’s so easy to pitch when you have a solid defense behind you,”

Coach Denny Little added: “Allyson did a great job locating her spots. She was outstanding. Pitching coach Amber Watson said it was a fun game to call.”

Haynes gets PSAC honor

Penn-Trafford grad Jakob Haynes, a sophomore at Seton Hill, was named Pennsylvaia State Athletic Conference West Athlete of the Week.

He is the first Griffin to earn the award this season.

Haynes hit .474 (9 of 19) in five games. He scored eight runs and had two doubles, four home runs and nine RBIs.

He went 4 for 5 with three home runs and six RBIs against IUP.

Haynes is hitting .377 with 29 hits, seven doubles, 10 home runs and 22 RBIs.
