Penn-Trafford notebook: Sean Goodman’s hat trick sparks hockey team

Penn-Trafford rebounded from its loss to Hempfield by defeating Wheeling Park in Class 2A PIHL action.
The Warriors (12-2) had 36 points and held a one-point lead on the Spartans (11-2) for the top spot in the standings.
Penn-Trafford had its 10-game winning streak halted Dec. 22 by the Spartans, 7-3.
The Warriors began the new year Jan. 5 by defeating the Patriots, 6-4.
After Penn-Trafford took a 1-0 lead on Sean Goodman’s unassisted goal, Wheeling Park scored three consecutive goals.
But goals by Goodman, with an assist from Zach Grkman, and Grkman, with assists from Jordan Turek and Ben Zierski, knotted the score 3-3 after one period.
Penn-Trafford took the lead for good in the second period on goals from Brendan Probola and Rylan Kiste. Roman Catello, C.J. Gimigliano, Goodman and Jake Lenart earned assists.
Goodman’s empty net goal, his third of the game, iced the win.
Goaltender Carson Weishorn, in relief of Levi Driskill, had 20 saves.
Goodman now has 17 goals while Zierski has 24 points.
Penn-Trafford was scheduled to host Bishop McCort on Jan. 12.
Volleyball tryouts
Seventh and eighth grade girls volleyball tryouts will take place Jan. 26-28 at the Trafford Middle School.
Eighth grade tryouts are set for 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Seventh grade tryouts are from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Signups close Jan. 22.
Swimming
The Penn-Trafford boys and girls swimming team returned to action Jan. 8 at home against Armstrong. Both teams were 2-2. They were scheduled to travel to Latrobe on Jan. 12 and visit Hempfield on Jan. 15.
