Penn-Trafford notebook: Warriors rally to keep the Victory Bell

In the annual “Battle for the Bell’ against rival Gateway, Penn-Trafford rallied in the second half to win the game and retain the Victory Bell.
The Warriors outscored the Gators, 26-0, in the second half for a 33-23 victory.
The Gators led 13-0 and 23-7 in the first half.
Ben Grabowski scored on runs of 18 and 58 yards, Travis Moorhead recovered a fumble for a score and Jack Miller booted a 36-yard field goal for the Warriors.
The Warriors’ only offense in the first half came on an 89-yard kickoff return by Nico Casciato.
Grabowski rushed for 148 yards and Cody Yacamelli rushed for 72 yards.
The Warriors (6-1, 2-1) traveled the Franklin Regional on Oct. 10 and will host Armstrong on Oct. 17 and Latrobe on Oct. 24.
Runners setting PRs
The Penn-Trafford Warriors cross country team competed in the annual Westmoreland County Coaches’ Association cross country championship meet Oct. 7 at the Westmoreland County Community College campus on a perfect day to run.
The team delivered outstanding performances by recording 11 personal records (PRs), highlighting their hard work and determination throughout the season.
Senior Jacob Dormire led the boys varsity team with a PR of 17 minutes, 34 seconds, finishing 18th in a strong field.
Senior Edir Sin Mohand followed closely at 18:07, placing 27th and securing a solid second spot for the team.
The Warriors finished seventh in the team standings. Hempfield was first.
Others to run were Justin Martin Jr., Nikolas Johal, Elijah Crivellaro, Lucas Carvajal and Josh Martin.
In the junior varsity race, sophomore Eli Kreidler set the tone with yet another PR of 22:15.
Leading the way for the girls was junior Faith Whipple, who ran a PR of 22:19, earning a 35th-place finish.
The other girls competing were Evelyn Hartman and Adelina Truschel.
Bauer gets hot
Brooke Bauer scored four goals against Hempfield and three more against Latrobe to help the Penn-Trafford field hockey team to consecutive wins.
Emma Chamberlin added goal in a 4-3 win against Latrobe, while Gabi Rubbe, Sarah Ley and Caeley Simon had goals in a 7-0 nonconference win against Class 3A Hempfield.
The Warriors (5-7-2) went 2-1-1 in their last four games. They played to a scoreless tie against Upper St. Clair, and they fell to Peters Township, 4-3.
On campus
With sophomore David Newsom out in front as the medalist, the Saint Vincent men’s golf team won the Grove City Invitational at Grove City Country Club.
Newsom, a Penn-Trafford graduate, shot 3-under-par 69 to win the individual title by two shots. The lefty finished with six birdies and carded a 4-under 32 in the front side.
SVC shot even-par 288, holding off Washington & Jefferson by four shots.
SVC had three players finish tied for fourth at even-par 72: junior Matt Edwards, sophomore Logan Clark (Norwin) and junior Owen Dzurko (Hempfield).
Honors
Penn-Trafford grad Dan Simon was inducted into the Penn State Behrend athletic hall of fame.
Simon, who swam for the Lions from 2011-15, was the first Behrend swimmer to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships. He was a three-time AMCC swimmer of the year and a three-time All-American honorable mention.
As a senior, he placed fifth in the 100-yard backstroke at the national meet.
He won 21 AMCC titles.
