Nick Turowski wasn’t picked by his golf coach at West Virginia University to compete in the Big 12 Match Play event.

Instead, the freshman was sent to Johnstown to play in the Red Flash Invitational at Sunnehanna Golf Club on Oct. 8.

The Penn-Trafford graduate used the event to prove to his coach that he belongs back on the main squad by winning the tournament with a 1-under 139 during the 36-hole event. He was the only player to break par. He recorded five birdies over his final 14 holes.

He was the second WVU golfer in a week to win an event. Kaleb Wilson won the inaugural Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational.

“I was a little upset,” Turowski said. “I did not pay well at Nemacolin Woodlands and that’s on me. None of my scores counted.

“But I played well at Sunnehanna and hopefully I’ll get a shot to be in the starting lineup when we host our next event in the Bahamas. I used this tournament as big-time motivation.”

The Mountaineers will play host to the White Sands Invitational at Paradise Island, Bahamas.

“Everything is going well,” Turowski said. “I am having fun, and I have straight A’s. Hopefully the coach gives me a chance to get back into the lineup. If not, I’ll keep working hard.”

The Warriors started the three-game winning streak by blanking Hempfield, 4-0. Scoring goals were Brooke Bauer, Rilie Moors, Emma Chamberlin and Simon.

The Penn-Trafford volleyball team improved to 7-1 in Section 3-4A thanks to wins against Hempfield, 3-1, on Oct. 8 and Plum, 3-1, on Oct. 9.

The Warriors have five consecutive section games, and they now lead Hempfield and Latrobe, each at 5-2.

Penn-Trafford still have games against Connellsville and Norwin.

Penn-Trafford improved to 2-0 by defeating Erie Prep, 6-4, on the road Oct. 8.

The Warriors led 2-1 after one period thanks to goals from Robert Thatcher and Aiden Drotos.

Kiste and Bienemann added goals in the third period. Bienemann added three assists and Kiste had two assists.
