To win any team championship, it takes more than one individual to perform well.

It takes everyone.

That is what occurred Thursday at the WPIAL team golf championships at Cedarbrook Golf Course.

The four champions — South Fayette (3A boys), Shady Side Academy (2A boys), Peters Township (3A girls) and North Catholic (2A girls) — had that special group.

There was one repeat champion. The Peters Township girls won their fourth consecutive Class 3A title.

Coming up short of repeats were: North Allegheny (3A boys), North Catholic (2A boys) and Shady Side Academy (2A girls).

Peters Township edged Fox Chapel, 344 to 345.

Senior medalist Ellie Benson led the Indians by shooting a 1-under-par 71.

The others to score for Peters Township were sophomore Betty Glyptis (80), freshman Autumn Merck (95) and junior Olivia Ondrejko (98).

“This is so special for me,” Benson said, fighting back tears. “We did something no one expected.

“I am very fortunate to be part of this team. This is all about teamwork.”

South Fayette senior Sam Bishop shot a 1-over 73 to lead the Lions to their first WPIAL title.

Fox Chapel finished second in a playoff.

The other Lions shooting in the 70s were senior Jackson Stephens (74), senior Noah Nickolas (76) and junior Hudson Vennum (78).

“I cannot say it was all me,” Bishop said. “Every guy on our team contributed. … It was a team effort. Everyone picked each other up. We all did great.”

Other scoring for the Lions was senior Barry Newman (84) and senior Hayden Downs (84).

Shady Side Academy junior Avi shot a 1-under to lead his team to the title. SSA had two other golfers score in the 70s: junior Jack Begg (78) and junior John DiBartolomeo (78).

Also scoring for Shady Side Academy were sophomore Dusyanth Paramesh (81) and sophomore Jay Mohn (95).

“I am glad we got back at this course,” Avi said. “We still have states. We have a brotherhood at Shady Side. We are all close to each other. We have each other’s backs no matter what.”

North Catholic sophomore Riley Kontul fired an 8-over 80 to lead the Trojans to their first WPIAL Class 2A title.

She was backed by senior Lizzie Fabian (96), Izzy Engleka (97) and Gigi Colafella (104).

“All the girls were great,” Kontul said. “It took a team effort. It is great that we won. Lizzie definitely stepped up for us. We really needed her score.

“We are excited to go to states and see what happens. I think we can do better.”
