For the second time in three years, the Peters Township Indians won WPIAL gold by outlasting Pittsburgh Central Catholic 1-0 in double overtime Saturday night at Elizabeth Forward high School.
Indian striker Jesse Scheirer scored in the 102nd minute – it was the sixth postseason goal and the 23rd goal scored this year by the senior. He gathered in a long pass and settled the ball with his chest, then streaked through two Viking defenders toward the middle of the field before blasting a shot past Viking goalkeeper Frank Gregg to clinch the WPIAL AAA Championship.
Central Catholic had the better of the chances in the first overtime period as they registered three shots on goal in a 60 second span on Indian goalkeeper Parker Ulrich.
Ultimately, Ulrich was up to the challenge as he made those three saves en route to stopping all six Viking shots on goal and registering his 13th shutout of the season.
This was the 5th championship appearance since 2005 for Peters Township who extended their record to 17-2-3. For the Central Catholic Vikings (16-3-2), it was a heartbreaking ending in their first ever WPIAL championship game. Both teams head into the PIAA playoffs by virtue of their successful run in the WPIAL playoffs.
