PIAA Class AA boys golf tournament continues Tuesday

Sewickley Academy junior JF Aber is tied for 19 th , and teammate Austin Applegarth, a senior is tied for 25 th after Monday’s 18-hole first round at the PIAA Class AA boys golf tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.

Aber shot a 9-over 80, while Applegarth fired an 85.

Quaker Valley junior Aidan Bulger fared a little better and is among six golfers tied for 13 th with 79s (8 over).

The field of 36 will return to the course Tuesday morning for the second round.

Applegarth will tee off first at 8:55, and Aber begins his round at 9:15.

Bulger takes to the course at 9:25.

McKelvey ninth after first round

Sewickley Academy senior Tatum McKelvey is all alone in ninth place (11 over, 83) after 18 holes of the girls AA state tournament at Heritage Hills.

Panthers junior Zoe Luther is 17 th after a 98 (26 over) in the first round Monday.

All 18 golfers return to the course Tuesday. Included in that group is North Catholic junior Maddie Smithco, the top WPIAL finisher after the first round.

Smithco is in second overall (6 over, 78), four strokes back of leader Lydia Swan, a sophomore from North East in District 10.

Luther begins her second round at 10:05, and McKelvey starts at 10:25.

The final group, which includes Swan, Smithco and Central Valley senior Kiaria Porter, goes off at 10:45.

PIAA team tennis gets underway

The PIAA Class AA girls team tennis tournament begins Tuesday, and WPIAL champion Sewickley Academy will face District 9 champion St. Mary’s at 2:30 p.m. at Shady Side Academy.

A victory propels the undefeated Panthers to the Hershey Racquet Club for Friday’s quarterfinals against either District 5 champion Somerset or District 3 runner-up Lancaster Catholic.

The semifinals and finals in Hershey will be Saturday.

Sewickley Academy made it to the PIAA semifinals last year before falling to District 1’s Lower Moreland.
