PIAA girls volleyball roundup: North Allegheny sweeps McDowell in 1st round

WPIAL champion North Allegheny took control early and didn’t let up, rolling past District 10 champion McDowell, 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-17), in a PIAA Class AAAA first-round girls volleyball match at North Catholic.

North Allegheny will play State College in the PIAA quarterfinals Saturday at a time and site to be determined.

State College 3, Baldwin 0 — District 6 champion State College swept past WPIAL runner-up Baldwin, 25-12, 25-23, 26-24.

Thomas Jefferson 3, DuBois 0 — The WPIAL runner-up Jaguars bounced back from a loss in the district title game to defeat District 9 champion DuBois, 25-16, 25-21, 25-19, in a PIAA Class AAA first-round match at Punxsutawney. The Jaguars will play District 10 champion Warren in the quarterfinals.

Bald Eagle Area 3, Serra Catholic 1 — District 6 champion Bald Eagle Area won the final two sets to defeat WPIAL third-place finisher Serra Catholic, 25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 25-15, in the PIAA Class AA first round at Bellefonte.

Corry 3, Frazier 2 — In a back-and-forth Class AA first-round match, WPIAL runner-up Frazier fell to District 10 champion Corry at Cochranton.

North Catholic 3, North Star 0 — At North Allegheny, WPIAL champion North Catholic rolled to a PIAA Class AA first-round win, 25-16, 25-10, 25-13. The Trojans will play Freeport in the quarterfinals.

Warren 3, Central Valley 0 — At Meadville, District 10 champion Warren blanked WPIAL third-place finisher Central Valley, 25-20, 25-15, 25-17.

Berlin 3, Fort Cherry 0 — The WPIAL third-place Rangers had their season come to a close after a 25-18, 25-14, 25-19 loss to District 5 champion Berlin in the PIAA Class A first round at Windber.

Bishop Carroll 3, Carmichaels 0 — District 6 champion Bishop Carroll swept Carmichaels, 25-15, 25-16, 25-18, in a PIAA Class A first-round match at Forest Hills.

Northern Cambria 3, Bishop Canevin 1 — At North Allegheny, WPIAL champion Bishop Canevin had its season come to a close after a PIAA Class A first-round loss to District 6 runner-up Northern Cambria, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22.
