A remarkable forty of the WPIAL’s forty-two Class AAA wrestlers survived the first day of wrestling and will again be in action Friday afternoon at the 2012 PIAA Wrestling Championships at the GIANT Center in Hershey. With three WPIAL wrestlers entered in each of the fourteen weight classes in the Class AAA brackets, twenty-seven won first round bouts Thursday afternoon to advance to the quarterfinals. Thirteen of the fifteen wrestlers losing in the first round turned around and won their first round consolation matches to remain alive in the tournament.
The WPIAL was perfect in five weight classes, advancing all three of its AAA wrestlers at 106, 126, 160, 182 and 285 pounds. Only the 220-pound bracket saw all three wrestlers drop their first round match. But Pine-Richland’s Ben Balish, Canon-McMillan’s Alex Campbell, and Greensburg Salem’s Tanner Hahn all bounced back to win their first round consolation bouts.
All four of the WPIAL’s Class AAA undefeated wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals. Franklin Regional’s Michael Kemerer (37-0) pinned Pleasant Valley’s Kenny Yanovich at 4:46 in a 106-pound match. At 120, Canon-McMillan’s Conner Schram (23-0), looking for his second state title, scored a 13-3 major decision over East Stroudsburg South’s Colby Ems. Schram’s teammate Cody Weircioch (43-0) also won by major decision, 11-3, over Owen J. Roberts’ Gordon Bolig at 170 pounds. And Pittsburgh Central Catholic senior Perry Hills (32-0), a University of Maryland football recruit, began the final weekend of his wrestling career with a 14-2 major decision over Lampeter-Strasburg’s Jeff Pickel at 195 pounds.
Other highly regarded WPIAL Class AAA wrestlers advancing to the quarterfinals included Upper St. Clair’s Mackenzie McGuire (132), Canon-McMillan’s Solomon Chishko (138), Latrobe’s Zack Zavatsky (160), Kiski Area’s Matt McCutcheon (182), and Canon-McMillan’s Cody Klempay (285).
One of the more surprising losses of the day came when the WPIAL’s 113-pound WPIAL champion, Sam Krivus (41-4), an outstanding freshman from Hempfield ranked #2 in the state, dropped a 3-1 overtime loss to Middletown’s Zach Ulerick in the first round. Krivus then struggled to a 3-2 first round consolation victory over Garnet Valley’s Michael Marino.
There are quite a few interesting quarterfinal bouts involving WPIAL wrestlers on Friday. Pittsburgh Central Catholic’s Vincenzo Joseph will take on Parkland’s Ethan Lizak, ranked #1 and a returning state runner-up, at 106 pounds. Joseph’s teammate, Tyler Manion, draws a tough assignment as the 152-pound WPIAL champion will face Central Dauphin’s top-ranked Garrett Peppelman. In an excellent 120-pound match-up, Franklin Regional’s Tyler Smith, ranked #3, will battle Pittsburgh City League champion and University Of Pittsburgh recruit Godwyn Nyama, ranked #2 in Pennsylvania.
And if it’s rematches you like, here’s a pair of them you’ll probably love. In a 126-pound gem, Canon-McMillan’s Colt Shorts will attempt to avenge a 5-4 loss to Central Dauphin’s Tyson Dippery. The two combatants met in the Big Macs’ classic 28-25 semifinal win over the Rams in the state team duals. At 182 pounds, it will be a rubber match between McDowell’s Khlique Harris and North Allegheny’s Jarred Lux. The two are ranked right behind McCutcheon in this weight class and split two very close decisions earlier this season.
Canon-McMillan leads the team scoring race with 23 points, followed by Central Dauphin with 14 points. Franklin Regional is tied for third place with Parkland with ten points. Pittsburgh Central Catholic rounds out the top five with 9.5 points.
Class AAA quarterfinal bouts will begin at 1:30pm on Friday, followed by the second round of consolation matches. Class AAA will again have only one session of wrestling on Friday.

WPIAL Class AA Wrestlers Awaken After Morning Struggles
After only eleven wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals with victories during the Thursday morning session of first round bouts, WPIAL Class AA wrestlers rebounded after lunchtime in the first round consolation matches to advance twenty-five of thirty-six entries to the second day of wrestling at the 2012 PIAA Wrestling Championships at the GIANT Center in Hershey.
Unaffected by the morning haze experienced by many of their counterparts, exhibited by an overall 11-25 win-loss record, the WPIAL’s three undefeated wrestlers easily advanced to the quarterfinals. Kittaning’s Jason Nolf (40-0), a returning state champion, recorded an 18-1 technical fall at 5:47 over Palmerton’s Josh Evans at 113 pounds. In a 170-pound first round match, Jefferson-Morgan’s Dustin Conti (44-0) cruised to a 6-1 decision over Tri Valley’s Evan Heffron. And Dakota DesLauriers, a 182-pound junior from Burrell advanced his season record to 43-0 with a first period pin of Tri Valley’s Lyle Troutman.
Meanwhile, Derry senior Jimmy Gulibon continued his quest to become only the tenth wrestler in state history with four PIAA titles. The state’s top-ranked 126-pounder scored an 11-3 major decision over Bethlehem Catholic’s Zane Heller. Gulibon, a Penn State recruit, will face Hanover’s Ian Brown, ranked #2 in PA, in a quarterfinal match Friday morning.
Other WPIAL wrestlers to advance to the Class AA quarterfinals were Beth-Center’s Zach Swarrow, Keystone Oaks’ Nick Zanetta (126), Bentworth’s Francis Mizia (160), Southmoreland’s Jordan Kitta (195), and heavyweights Corey Garry of Fort Cherry and Nate Grandelis of Chartiers-Houston.
In one of the morning’s biggest upsets, South Fayette junior Mike Fetchet, the fifth and final qualifier at 160 pounds at last weekend’s Southwest Regional in Johnstown, advance to the quarterfinals, edging Northwest Regional champion Kyle Caggiano, the third-ranked wrestler in the state from Ridgway.
Bethlehem Catholic leads the team scoring with 20.5 points. Fort LeBoeuf and Tri Valley are tied for second place with 13 points. Benton is in fourth place with 11 points. Chartiers-Houston is the top WPIAL team, tied for fifth place with Mifflinburg, Greenville, and Pen Argyl with nine points.
Class AA will run two sessions of wrestling on Friday. Quarterfinal bouts will begin at 9:00AM, followed by the second round of consolation matches. The semi-finals will begin at 6:30pm, followed by the third and fourth round consolation bouts.
