Pine-Richland defensive back Jay Timmons flips commitment to top-ranked Ohio State

Pine-Richland’s Jay Timmons, a nationally ranked cornerback, has flipped his college commitment for the second time in five months and now is headed to Ohio State.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior committed in June to Florida State, the alma mater of his father Lawrence, a former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker. However, those plans changed after the top-ranked Buckeyes offered Timmons a scholarship in September.

Recruiting website Rivals ranks him 15th among cornerback prospects nationally in the senior class.

Timmons revealed his college switch Thursday on social media. He’d originally committed in April to a different Big Ten program, Indiana, before flipping to Florida State two months later.

A two-way starter at wide receiver and defensive back, Timmons helped defending WPIAL champion Pine-Richland earn a No. 1 seed in this year’s Class 5A playoffs.

Limited to six games by injury, Timmons has caught 31 passes for 549 yards and nine touchdowns. He also rushed for a score. Defensively, he made 21 tackles.

Pine-Richland (9-1) hosts No. 8 Shaler (4-7) in a WPIAL quarterfinal Friday.

The Rams will be without “several starters” because of either injury or team-conduct issues, said coach Jon LeDonne, who didn’t specify which players are out. However, LeDonne said Timmons along with star wide receiver Khalil Taylor and quarterback Aaron “Oobi” Strader are all playing.

Taylor and Strader, both juniors, also have Power 4 college offers.

Pine-Richland was off last week with a first-round bye.
