Plum girls win rematch with Hempfield, take 3rd straight regional team bowling title

In a rematch of last month’s WPIBL finals, Plum defeated Hempfield in three games to win the girls team title at the Western PA Regional Bowling Championships on Saturday.

Hempfield won the first game of the finals, 172-149, before the Mustangs roared back with victories in the final two games — 210-181 and 210-146 — to win their third straight regional title. Plum also won the WPIBL title in three games last month.

The top six teams advance to states March 14-15.

Plum led the way in qualifying with a score of 3,833. Norwin (3,751) was second, followed by Hempfield (3,670), McDowell (3,491), Deer Lakes (3,293) and Latrobe (3,257).

In the quarterfinals, McDowell defeated Deer Lakes and Hempfield topped Latrobe. In the semifinals, Plum defeated McDowell and Hempfield beat Norwin.

Kylie McConahy had the top score in qualifying with a 673 series and 276 game. The Yellowjackets finished seventh to narrowly miss a trip to states.

Hempfield’s Amelia Droste (631) was second in qualifying. Kiski Area’s Veronica Flanagan (627), Plum’s Callie Schimmer (608) and McDowell’s Taylor Kretz (601) also made the all-tournament team.
