Quaker Valley football gets back in the win column with high-scoring overtime victory

The Quaker Valley football team is feeling a little better after Friday’s wild 50-43 overtime victory over Keystone Oaks snapped a three-game losing streak.

The win was big for the Quakers (2-3, 2-2) as it slotted them in a three-way tie with the Eagles and Central Valley for third place in the Tri-County West Conference.

Quaker Valley topped Central Valley 18-0 in the season opener.

Quakers senior quarterback Ethan Moore had a balanced effort in Friday’s win. He threw for 182 yards and three touchdowns and added 190 rushing yards and three scores.

Moore connected with Cam Nelson on a 10-yard TD pass in overtime to give Quaker Valley the lead. The Quakers defense then stopped Keystone Oaks quarterback Logan Shrubb on fourth down at the 1-yard line to seal the win.

Quaker Valley (2-3, 2-2) also came close to getting into the win column in Week 4 but was edged 7-6 by undefeated Elizabeth Forward, No. 2 in the TribHSSN WPIAL 3A rankings.

The Quakers’ other two losses this season came to No. 1 3A Aliquippa and No. 5 3A Beaver Falls.

Moving on to regionals

Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy will be well represented at the PIAA Class AA Western Regional golf tournament Oct. 15 at Tom’s Run Golf Club.

Quakers junior Aidan Bulger placed third at the WPIAL championships last Thursday at Allegheny Country Club, while teammate Michael Tanabe, a senior, came in eighth.

Sewickley Academy sophomore Navin Rana (12 ^th ) and senior Austin Applegarth (15 ^th ) also advanced with finishes in the top 18.

At regionals, the top 22 golfers in the AA field will punch their tickets to states Oct. 22 and 23 at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.

A berth in the state tournament would be the first for Bulger, Tanabe, Rana and Applegarth.

A quick rematch

The Quaker Valley and North Catholic girls soccer teams don’t have to wait long for the rematch of Saturday’s 3-0 victory by the Quakers.

The teams will play Monday at 7 p.m. at Chuck Knox Stadium, and sole possession of first place in Section 1-AA will be on the line.

Quaker Valley (5-2) has won three of four in section, while North Catholic (5-2) saw its three-game section win streak snapped in Saturday’s loss to the Quakers.
