There aren’t many better ways to follow up on winning your program’s third WPIAL title than what the 2025 Quaker Valley girls’ soccer team has done.
Building on their recent WPIAL championship, the Quakers defeated Central Valley, 3-1, on Oct. 8, improving to 9-0-1 in section play and claiming the Section 3-2A title. Junior Annabel Miko scored twice, while her classmate, Rowan Wallace, netted the third goal.
“Last year we shared the section title with Beaver,” co-head coach Rachel Loudermilk said.
“This year, the girls set their sights on winning it outright, so it meant the world to claim the title on our home turf, on senior night, against a great Central Valley team. The girls truly played as a team tonight, and that is why they got the job done.”
The Quakers were set to end the 2025 regular season with a nonsection game against South Fayette on Wednesday (Oct. 15), bringing a close to one of the better regular-season performances in Class 2A this year.
Through 15 games, Quaker Valley has posted a 13-1-1 record, outscoring its opponents 57-4. In section play, that margin is 40-2 — helped by eight shutouts. On average, the Quakers are netting 3.8 goals per contest while allowing less than one (0.27). This combination of potent offense and impenetrable defense has been a team effort, something co-head coach Maggie Behun takes pride in.
“… While individually all our players are unique,” Behun said, “they come together and produce something very special.
“This group makes soccer fun to watch and coach. Just ask an opposing coach, referee or spectator, and they will tell you just that. Can you tell we’re super proud of them?”
Quaker Valley started the year with a 9-0 nonsection win against Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. The Quakers dropped their second game of the year against Pine-Richland, but would follow that loss up with nine straight victories. During that streak, Quaker Valley beat rival Sewickley Academy and earned a key overtime win against Central Valley on Sept. 17. In that section game against Central Valley, junior Hope Waller netted the game-winning goal, which was the first of two for her this year.
“We joke that Hope is the overtime queen,” Loudermilk said.
“As a junior, she has been a leader and brings confidence and composure to our front line. It is really important as a coach to have players who, in high-pressure situations, can keep their cool and intensity to get the job done. Hope has proven she can be that clutch player.”
Waller’s two overtime goals this season, the other coming in a win at Ambridge, contributed to her tying for the second-most goals on the team with seven. In fact, five players have scored six or more times this year, with junior Annabel Miko leading the way with 17. She is followed by sophomore Lilly Baker and Waller with seven, then senior Ari Bosh’s and junior Rowan Wallace with six. Having multiple scoring threats on the field is by design, according to Loudermilk and Behun.
“To be successful as a team, you can’t rely on one person,” Loudermilk said.
“Annabel Miko is obviously a standout with hitting the back of the net — and you need a player like her to get that momentum going. But our success comes from everyone contributing. If teams can shut down one player and you fall apart, that is trouble. But we have a whole team willing to step up. … I think that is what helps to make us a true team. Everyone needs each other to get it done.”
All season, Quaker Valley has shown that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. To build on this collective success, the team now looks to improve daily, aiming for another deep postseason run.
“We focus on ‘better,’” Loudermilk said.
“Every day, every practice, every moment, can we be a little better than we were yesterday? Can we work just a little harder, push a little further? If we can look back and say I played better today than I did yesterday, then we are moving in the right direction and should have a good shot at a strong playoff run.”
The WPIAL playoffs will begin Monday (Oct. 20), with the top four teams from each section qualifying to compete for the championship. After finishing first in the section, Quaker Valley has secured its playoff spot and is positioned well to defend its WPIAL title.
