Quaker Valley started the school year strong in the fall of 2024 and ended it with a double golden bang in the spring of 2025 to not only repeat as Class 3A Trib Cup champions, but crush the competition in winning its fifth title in the last six years.
The Quakers scored the second-most points outside of North Allegheny in any classification to win by 205 points and capture the school’s ninth Sports Cup, the fourth most ever behind North Allegheny, Sewickley Academy and Greensburg Central Catholic.
“Our coaching staffs continue to recognize how fortunate they are to work with dedicated and driven student athletes, and we don’t take that for granted,” Quaker Valley athletic director and boys basketball coach Mike Mastroianni said. “Winning the Trib Cup has been a source of pride for all of our teams and has brought them closer as they support each other.”
The Trib Cup is a yearlong competition in 25 team sports to determine the top WPIAL program in each classification. Schools earn points for section or conference championships, WPIAL playoff berths and district postseason success, state playoff berths and PIAA championships.
Quaker Valley has now captured back-to-back cups in Class 3A after winning four Sports Cups in Class 4A in a five year span between the 2017-2018 and 2021-2022 school years. The Quakers also captured three cups in Class 2A between the 2011-2012 and 2014-2015 school years.
QV began its title defense with a strong start to this past school year with district championships in girls soccer and girls volleyball.
“We had a number of memorable days this past athletic season and our girls volleyball and girls soccer teams capturing WPIAL championships on the same day and only a few hours apart was one of those,” Mastroianni said. “Although their makeup was different, our girls volleyball team was a veteran team with experience and our girls soccer team was young with several key underclassmen, they ultimately ended up at the same place with WPIAL championships on the same day.”
The Quakers then completed the incredible successful athletic year with district and state gold in boys and girls track and field.
“Obviously winning two state championships on the same day in girls and boys track capped off an outstanding athletic season for all of our teams,” Mastroianni said. “Such a difficult and unique accomplishment at the state level for our track teams and one we will talk about for a long time.”
Quaker Valley produced points in 18 different sports, the most in Class 3A. The Quakers’ 735 points was the second most points tallied by any school and was 135 points better than the No. 3 school on the list in the entire WPIAL.
The point total is 250 points more than what Quaker Valley ended up with the previous school year, when the Quakers edged Avonworth by 35 points.
“We are so appreciative of our student-athletes dedication and work ethic across the board,” Mastroianni said. “We have always had such a great school and community connection with sports.”
North Catholic had the fifth-highest point total in the WPIAL but was a distant second to Quaker Valley with district titles in boys and girls tennis and boys golf.
Rounding out the top five in Class 3A was Shady Side Academy in third place, South Park in fourth and Avonworth in fifth place.
