Quakers hope to build on overtime triumph

The Quaker Valley football team hopes to build on last week’s 50-43 Tri-County West Conference overtime victory at Keystone Oaks with another conference road contest Friday at Waynesburg Central.

With three weeks left in the regular season, the Quakers are right in the playoff race. QV now is tied with Keystone Oaks and Central Valley for third place in the conference at 2-2, and the Quakers own the playoff tiebreaker over both the Eagles and Warriors should that come into play.

Aliquippa (4-0) and Beaver Falls (3-1) top the conference and are the two teams which defeated Quaker Valley.

The Quakers’ win over Keystone Oaks came on the heels of a close 7-6 nonconference loss to Elizabeth Forward, No. 2 this week behind Aliquippa in the TribHSSN 3A rankings.

Cross country teams close section slate

The Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy boys and girls cross country teams will join Avonworth for the teams’ final Division II, Section 2 meet Friday at 4 p.m. at War Memorial Park in Sewickley.

After the meet, the teams turn their attention to preparation for the WPIAL championships Oct. 25 at Cal U (Pa.).

In addition to training sessions, the Quakers and Panthers will take part in a pair of long-running invitationals.

Quaker Valley again will run at the 21-team Midwestern Athletic Conference Championships on Oct. 11 at Brush Creek Park in North Sewickley Township.

Sewickley Academy will get a preview of the Cal U course on Oct. 18 at the 50-team Tri-State Track Coaches Association met. As with WPIALs, there will be boys and girls races in Class A, AA and AAA.

Soccer teams back in action

A trio of soccer matches involving teams from Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy will be Friday and Saturday.

The Quaker Valley boys (10-3) step away from their Section 4-AA schedule and will visit South Fayette (7-4-1) on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Lions sit in third place in Section 4-AAA.

The Sewickley Academy boys take their 8-0 Section 1-A record into a matchup at Riverside (5-1-1) on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

On the girls side, Sewickley Academy (2-9-1, 2-7-1) draws Freedom (11-1, 9-0) for a Section 3-A matchup Saturday at 2 p.m.

Freedom has won six in a row, and it outscored its opponents 56-4 during that stretch.
