Recapping the 2025 PIAA football playoffs

The third time really was a golden charm in the 2025 PIAA football championships for a pair of WPIAL teams.

Playing in its third state title game, Avonworth brought home state gold by avenging a loss to Northwestern Lehigh in overtime a year ago.

Also, playing against Bishop Guilfoyle Academy for the third time in the PIAA Class A finals, Clairton defeated the defending state champion Marauders to claim the Bears’ district record tying fifth state championship.

However, for a second straight year, Central Catholic returned home with state silver after bookending its season with losses to LaSalle College in the PIAA 6A finals.

The 2025 PIAA football championships are now in the books.

Three teams came to Cumberland Valley hoping to repeat as state champs and all three — Bishop McDevitt in 5A, Northwestern Lehigh in 3A and Bishop Guilfoyle Academy in Class A — all lost.
