Record-setting quarterback eligible at Western Beaver after forgoing Central Catholic transfer

Record-setting quarterback Jaivin Peel is fully eligible for his sophomore football season at Western Beaver after a hearing Monday at the WPIAL office in Scott.

Peel is a student at Lincoln Park and plays football at nearby Western Beaver through a co-op between the schools. He took steps this summer to transfer to Central Catholic before returning to Lincoln Park.

The WPIAL initially scheduled an eligibility hearing to examine his move to Central Catholic. But WPIAL executive director Scott Seltzer said Monday’s hearing instead focused largely on his transfer back to Lincoln Park.

“The board did not find there was enough evidence to say that the transfer back was athletically motivated,” Seltzer said.

The 6-foot, 185-pound Peel passed for 2,898 yards last season and earned first-team all-conference honors in the Class 2A Midwestern. His yardage total was believed to be a WPIAL record for a freshman.

The PIAA rule that makes most transfers postseason ineligible does not apply to Peel because his transfers occurred before his 10th-grade season. He is eligible for both the regular season and playoffs.
