Saturdays Scholastic Starz for Week Two

On a gorgeous Saturday afternoon for high school football, nine district teams took to the field in an effort to keep the high school offense going that began on Thursday and continued big time on Friday. For the most part, those teams did no t disappoint as six of the nine scores 20 points or more. Here are the five standout performances from the second Saturday of the season.

Mikell Moore – McKeesport

There is a different vibe this season at McKeesport, where former stand out coach George Smith has returned after three years off the sidelines, as has their lethal ground attack known as the flex-bone. In an early season homecoming game for both the coach and the school, Mikell Moore led a ground game that racked up 247 yards as he scored on runs of 3 and 16 yards to help the Tigers pull away and improve to 2-0 with a 33-20 victory over the visiting Woodland Hills Wolverines in a Class AAAA non-conference contest.

Bo Hampson – Waynesburg

After a quiet first half in which he played the role of blocker/decoy more than runner, Bo Hampson helped a strong ground game in the second half as Waynesburg won for the first time this season. Hampson rushed for 112 yards on 11 carries, most coming out of the wildcat offense in the second half, plus he scored the game winning touchdown on a 38-yard run early in the fourth quarter as the Raiders beat the host Summit Academy Knights 14-7 in a Class AA Non-Conference matchup.

Hunter Roknich – Western Beaver

Down at home following the first quarter and trying to avoid dropping to 0-2 in the Class A Big 7 Conference, Western Beaver went on the 'hunt' for some offense and found it in Hunter Roknich. The junior running back/quarterback had a career day on Saturday, running 30 times for 230 yards and two touchdowns out of the wildcat offense as he comes back from a concussion that kept him out most of his sophomore season as the Golden Beavers rolled past the Our lady of the Sacred Heart Chargers 30-13.

Jesse Zelonka and Tre Tipton – Apollo-Ridge

There was no feeling sorry for themselves in Week Two as Apollo-Ridge took to the air on Saturday to bounce back from a heartbreaking double overtime road loss to Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic in the season opener. Quarterback Jesse Zelonka hit on 11 of 16 passes for 114 yards with a scoring run and a pair of touchdowns passes, one of which went to Tre Tipton, who caught 8 passes for for 64 yards as the Vikings rolled past the host Wilkinsburg Tigers 56-36 in a Class A Eastern Conference fray.

Zach Quattron – Serra Catholic

In a late addition to their schedule because of the Imani Christian mess, Serra Catholic headed south to Maryland for a Class A non-conference matchup while their quarterbacks game went due north Saturday evening. Even though they did not win, Serra signal caller Zach Quattron was huge both with his arm and his legs. he hit on 11 of 20 passes for 183 yards and a scoring pass, plus he rushed for 219 yards and scored on runs of 35, 14 and 26 yards as the Eagles fell to the host Hancock Panthers 55-26.
