The boys basketball team at Sewickley Academy is like a finely tuned machine.
After 15 games, the Panthers had racked up both the best offensive (72.8 ppg) and defensive (29 ppg) averages in the WPIAL in boys basketball.
And Sewickley’s hoopsters were even more impressive in Section 2-2A play with 75.7 ppg and 25.9 ppg averages.
“We’re just trying to take it one game at a time keeping our focus small,” Sewickley coach Mike Iuzzolino said. “We have been doing a great job on the defensive side making sure to take away the other team’s 3-point shots.”
The Panthers scored 75 or more points seven times, including hitting for a season-high 92 points Jan. 21 against Brentwood.
Sewickley also held eight opponents to less than 30 points, highlighted by a 73-9 victory Jan. 6 against Propel Braddock Hills.
Little wonder that the Panthers were 15-0 overall and 9-0 in the section following their 67-44 nonsection win Jan. 24 at home against Class 5A Peters Township, which fell to 12-5.
Mamadou Kane, a 6-8 sophomore forward, scored 20 points for Sewickley while 6-5 senior guard/forward Lucas Grimsley chipped in with 12.
“To our guys’ credit, it doesn’t matter who we are playing,” Iuzzolino said. “They have done an excellent job of staying locked into the game plan and disciplined to play for the whole 32 minutes.”
Among the unsung players on the Panthers roster are 6-5 forwards Ja’mere Guyton, Rob Southall and 6-foot guard Connor Tull, a trio of sophomores.
“All of them have been playing quality minutes and giving us a big lift off the bench,” Iuzzolino said. “Ja’mere has done a great job defensively and finishes incredibly at the rim. Rob has added solid rebounding and finishing at the rim when he gets opportunities, and Connor has done an outstanding job of spacing the floor and making 3-point shots at 50%.”
Sewickley has been ranked No. 1 in Class 2A all season by Trib HSSN and has clinched a WPIAL playoff spot.
Rounding out the Trib HSSN top five for the week ending Jan. 24 were Jeannette (15-1), Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (13-4), Neshannock (12-3) and Clairton (13-1).
