Sewickley Herald notebook: Sewickley Academy soccer teams fare well in opening round

Senior midfielder Finn Wentz scored a pair of goals as No. 7 Sewickley Academy won a 4-0 decision against No. 10 Trinity Christian (8-10) in the first round of the WPIAL Class A boys soccer playoffs.
Senior defender Blake Wilmot and junior midfielder Ben Terrell added a goal apiece for the Panthers, who improved to 12-4 and faced No. 2 Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in the quarterfinals.
Also in the Class A first round, No. 8 Eden Christian Academy (9-9) eked past No. 9 Beth-Center, 1-0, in a shootout after the teams played 100 scoreless minutes.
The Warriors improved to 9-9 and met No. 1 Bentworth in the quarterfinal round.
Also, junior forward Emma Eannarino clicked for four goals while freshman midfielder Claire Karsman added a pair as top-seeded Sewickley Academy blanked No. 16 Ellis School (5-8), 7-0, in the first round of the Class A girls soccer playoffs.
The Panthers (16-1) met No. 9 Carlynton in the quarterfinals. Carlynton (11-7-1) edged No. 8 Eden Christian Academy, 2-1, in overtime in the first round.
Gigi Choate scored the overtime winner for the Cougars. Riley Mauro also scored once.
Quaker Valley advances
Third-seeded Quaker Valley exploded for nine goals in the second half to overpower No. 14 Southmoreland, 11-0, in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A girls soccer playoffs Oct. 21 at Chuck Knox Stadium.
Sophomore attacker Lily Baker sparked the Quakers with a sizzling five-goal performance and was complemented by senior midfielder Ari Bosh and sophomore M/D Mia Duckstein with two goals apiece.
Rowan Wallace, a junior midfielder, tacked on one goal and senior D/M Ivy Armbrust netted her first varsity goal in the victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ava Hajok recorded the shutout, the Quakers’ 12th of the season.
QV (14-2-1) was to meet No. 6 Central Valley in the quarterfinals. Central Valley (13-3-1) blanked No. 11 Keystone Oaks, 7-0, in the first round.
QV netters qualify
The Quaker Valley girls volleyball team tipped off the postseason as the defending WPIAL champion in Class 2A.
The Quakers have qualified for the district playoffs for four consecutive years.
“The girls have shown some signs of playing really good volleyball this year,” QV coach Mike Vavrek said. “This team was very youthful when it came to varsity experience.”
Quakers top North Catholic
Quaker Valley spoiled North Catholic’s season debut in the PIHL Varsity A Blue Division with a 5-1 win Oct. 16 at Baierl Ice Complex.
Junior forward Kieran Cain scored twice for the Quakers, sophomore forward Matthias Lezama had a goal and three assists and senior forward Jace Vasbinder added a goal and two assists.
Jack Watson, a junior defenseman, rounded out the QV scoring with a third-period goal. Senior forward Max Modrovich was credited with two assists in the game; senior forward Colin York tacked on one assist.
QV freshman goaltender Kian McKenna stopped eight of nine shots against the Trojans.
The Quakers improved to 4-1 on the season.
