One word that would aptly describe the Quaker Valley girls lacrosse team is athletic.
The majority (15) of girls on the team are two-sport athletes.
Lucy Roig, a junior midfielder and the Quakers’ leading scorer the past two years, along with juniors Mia Floro and Lily Millet, sophomore Anna Campbell and freshman Leasia Karto, also are QV basketball players.
Two seniors, Lily Pulkowski and Grace Wiehe, and freshman Charlotte Chappell were members of the soccer team in the fall. Another freshman, Molly Millet, competed in soccer in middle school while junior Meredith Fallgren played soccer two years ago.
Emily Reiner, a senior, and Isabel King, sophomore, have skated in the Steel City Selects hockey program for the past few years.
Nora Hammond played volleyball while Ruby Krotine was a diver in the girls swim program. Both are seniors. Alexa Westwood, a junior, is on the swim team.
Sophomores Madeline Horton and Mary Molchen and freshman Katharine Miller are top prospects in lacrosse. Fallgren, one of five juniors on the squad, plans to continue her lacrosse career as a defender at Christopher Newport University.
Eden marches on
Eden Christian Academy’s baseball team remained undefeated at 6-0 with a 10-5 section win March 31 against Serra Catholic.
Eden scored all of its runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to improve to 3-0 in Section 3-A.
Winning pitcher Noah Emswiler, a left-handed junior, tripled and drove in three runs for the Warriors. Senior infielder Jacob Janicki tripled, doubled and had two RBIs, while junior catcher Brady Hull doubled twice and drove in one.
The Warriors rolled past nonsection foes South Side (12-5), Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (9-2) and Laurel (3-1) in their first three games, then handed 19-3 and 13-1 defeats to Clairton in back-to-back section contests.
Eden finished 20-6 overall, 5-2 in the playoffs, 12-0 in Section 3A last year and almost ran the table in the postseason with WPIAL and PIAA runner-up finishes.
Roundball selections
The 21st Roundball Classic all-star weekend will be May 24-25 at North Allegheny. There will be seven all-senior games over two days — four boys and three girls — with players from the WPIAL, City League and District 10.
Sewickley Academy’s Nolan Donnelly and Quaker Valley’s Dana Kromah were chosen to their respective all-star teams in Class 2A and 4A.
There will be four games May 24 and three May 25. Tickets are $10 per game of $15 for the weekend.
There also will be undergrad games – the Rising Stars Challenge — on May 19, 20 and 21 at RIZE Sports in Leetsdale. Rosters for those games will be announced later.
Eclectic mix
Quaker Valley coach Christi Hays described the boys tennis team as “eclectic.”
While No. 1 singles player Will Meagher is a sophomore tournament player, sophomores Jack Watson and Charlie Pyle also compete in hockey while juniors Tanner Schultz and Sutton Hoehl double up as soccer team members.
QV’s veteran coach indicated that senior captain Matthew Henry, junior Patrick Connors and freshmen Carter Hawes, Dom Ditano and J.P. Kenny are good athletes who specialize in tennis.
Shutout win
Gabby Edmunds went 2 for 2 with a double and four RBIs, Marie Bigi went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs and Sophie Crichton and Charlotte Andrews doubled to lead Sewickley Academy’s softball team to a 16-0 nonsection win March 31 against Carlynton.
Winning pitcher Charlotte Andrews threw a one-hitter and struck out seven for the Panthers, who improved to 2-0.
