In honor of National Coaches Day last week, the PIAA announced the selections for the 2024-25 PIAA Coaches of the Year.

Quaker Valley track and field coach Jared Jones was among 25 coaches across 13 boys and girls sports to be recognized. He was honored for his work with the QV boys.

Jones’ Quaker Valley track and field teams swept the WPIAL and PIAA Class 2A boys and girls titles last spring.

Jay Olawaiye (girls triple jump), Jonah Montagnese (boys 1,600), the boys 1,600-meter relay and the boys 3,200-meter relay won gold medals at the state meet.

Jones just completed his fifth season with the Quakers.

Overall, the Quakers’ track and field program was represented by 16 athletes in 24 events, along with four relay teams, at the PIAA Class 2A meet at Shippensburg University.

“The boys set three school records at the state meet,” Jones said afterward. “The boys team now owns six school records and five second-best all-time performances. Ten different boys from this team hold top two marks in QV history.

“This extraordinary team also set a new record for most points ever scored by any 2A or 3A boys team at the PIAA championship meet.”

North Allegheny swimming coach Patrick Wenzel was the only other WPIAL coach to be honored.

Coaches were nominated by school administrators, coaches associations, the PIAA board of directors and members of the PIAA executive staff.

The honorees are chosen for their “significant impact on their respective sports programs, the success of their teams, their commitment to PIAA and their demonstration of outstanding sportsmanship throughout the year.”

“Education-based athletics is a vital part of the high school experience, and it thrives because of the passion and commitment of our member school coaches,” PIAA executive director Robert Lombardi said in a statement. “Their dedication leaves a lasting impact on the lives of student-athletes every day.”

QV boys earn key win

Tanner Schultz converted a penalty kick and Liam Miller also scored to lead Quaker Valley to a 2-0 victory over Hopewell (6-8, 6-7) in Section 2-2A boys soccer Oct. 7.

Coupled with Central Valley’s 2-1 overtime win over Avonworth (14-2-1, 12-2-1), the result put the Quakers (13-2-1, 12-1-1) in the driver’s seat to claim the section title.

The playoff pairings were set to be announced Oct. 15.

The Quakers have locked up one of four berths in Section 2.

• Sewickley Academy’s boys soccer team also has locked up a playoff spot.

QV football falls

The Quaker Valley football team fell to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in the Class 3A Western Hills Conference after a 40-19 loss to Avonworth on Oct. 3.

Ben McHenry caught a 30-yard TD pass, returned an interception 101 yards for a score, blocked a field goal and kicked an extra point.

QB Atticus Barr threw for 59 yards with a touchdown and interception. Rex Fatur ran for 113 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

Quakers compete in doubles

The Quaker Valley doubles tandem of Jane Lenhard and Kate Miller reached the WPIAL semifinals before falling to eventual champions Veronica Zinski and Marann Buckanovich from Winchester Thurston, 6-3, 6-0.

The Quakers’ second doubles pair of Livia Jobbins and Grace Jadlowiec lost in the quarterfinals to North Catholic’s Evelyn Marche and Macaria Stall, 10-3.

QV golfers battle at semifinals

Quaker Valley’s boys golf team finished sixth at the WPIAL Class 2A semifinals held at Hickory Heights Golf Club in Bridgeville on Oct. 7.

The Quakers finished with 415 strokes. Shady Side Academy (393), Avonworth (397) and Beaver (401) advanced to the WPIAL finals.

Quaker Valley was led by sophomore Ty Stofko, who shot an 80, followed by sophomore Addy Davis (81), sophomore Joseph Kamnikar (81), senior Will Newlin (84) and senior Makenna Kamnikar (89).

PIHL season commences

Quaker Valley’s hockey team opened the season with shutout wins over Meadville, 4-0, and Montour, 5-0, before falling to Canon-McMillan, 6-1, on Oct. 7.

Jace Vasbinder had three goals and an assist, while Matthias Lezama had a goal and three assists. Ben McHenry added two goals and an assist. Goalie Ian Lorang played all three games and had 83 saves with a 2.00 goals-against average and .933 save percentage.
