Quaker Valley’s hockey team outscored the opposition by a 17-0 overall difference in recent back-to-back PIHL Class A games.

QV blanked Richland, 9-0, on Jan. 8 as sophomore forward Matthias Lezama had three goals and an assist, Jace Vasbinder added two goals and an assist and Ben McHenry scored twice.

The Quakers followed up Jan. 12 with an 8-0 victory over Indiana behind Lezama’s two goals and two assists, and two goals and assist from Vasbinder and Max Modrovich. Vasbinder, Modrovich and McHenry are senior forwards.

“I’m pretty happy with how we’ve been playing,” Vasbinder said. “I think we are doing good as a team, putting up points and mostly shutting it down on defense.

“I think if we keep playing like this, the rest of our season will go our way. We just need to continue the way we have been playing and battle against adversity.”

QV senior goaltender Ian Lorang made eight saves against Richland and 15 against Indiana, giving him six shutouts this season.

QV improved to 13-1-1 in the Varsity A Blue division, slightly behind frontrunning Canon-McMillan. The two wins gave the Quakers 11 victories in their last 12 games and a Class A division-leading 96 goals overall.

“We are progressing and excited to compete the rest of the way,” QV coach Kevin Quinn said. “We have big challenges ahead and are working hard to be ready for them.”

Boosters play key role in trip south

The Quaker Valley basketball teams flew to Orlando to participate in the KSA Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29-31 at the Gaylord Palms Convention Center.

Rachel Watson, president of the QV’s girls basketball boosters, was prominent in the planning process for the girls’ trip.

“The girls varsity basketball boosters would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Sewickley Herald and the greater Sewickley community for the incredible support shown to our team this season,” Watson said. “We are deeply grateful to everyone who supports and believes in this team. The pride our players felt knowing their community stood behind them was evident every step of the journey.

“Thank you for helping make this opportunity a reality and for continuing to be a cornerstone of support for Quaker Valley students and families. We are proud to represent such a generous and caring community. Your actions sent a powerful message to our players: Their effort, discipline and commitment are valued. That message carries tremendous weight and inspires them to continue striving both on and off the court.”
