After finishing close for so many years, the Shady Side Academy boys team has finally reached the top of the state Class AA swimming mountain. The Indians swam their way to a state title Wednesday and Thursday at Bucknell University by beating runner-up Fairview by 27 points. Indiana was the only other WPIAL team to finish in the top ten overall with 8th place. SSA won the 200-yard medley relay on Wednesday and the 400-yard freestyle relay on Thursday. The Indians David Paulk won gold in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle relay while SSA teammate Broderick Kelley took first in the 100-yard butterfly. The only other district swimmer who won gold was Margaret Gruber of Mars, who had another record setting performance in winning the 100-yard butterfly. West Allegheny finished second overall in Girls Class AA.
