Charlotte Barker chose to come back to cross country as a junior because she wanted to compete for a state title. The Shady Side Academy runner was able to leave a strong first impression, as an individual and with the Bulldogs collectively.

“It was my first season, obviously,” Barker said. “I think we only had two returners in the top eight. As we built in September and October, we realized we were strong. It was exciting to see.”

The Bulldogs collected the WPIAL and PIAA Class A titles as a team. Barker won the WPIAL title with a time of 18:38.5, just coming in ahead of teammate Josephine Lenart.

“I could not be more grateful for Josie,” Barker said. “She’s a great training partner. We support each other as friends and teammates.”

Barker placed fourth overall at the PIAA championships, coming in at 19:57. Lenart finished in second.

Barker appreciated having an opportunity to compete at the PIAA Foundation Meet earlier in the season, where she placed seventh.

“It’s not my favorite course in the world,” Barker said. “Everyone knows the second mile is challenging. You have to stay confident when you are already hurting so early. That’s not typical in other races.”

Barker, who was a state medalist at the outdoor state track championships last spring, said she loves being in the toughest environments. Winning a team state title means a lot.

“I appreciate being at big meets like the Penn Relays and New Balance Nationals,” Barker said. “I like being surrounded by girls who are talented. I think being able to see your potential as a runner and being in big meets like those are invaluable.”
