The Shaler unified bocce team scored its first-ever victory last Wednesday at Montour.
The Titans defeated the Spartans, 2-1, and will have their first scheduled home match Feb. 22 against Hampton.
Shaler’s program is part of the Interscholastic Unified Sports program sponsored by the Special Olympics in Pennsylvania. The teams are made up of six to eight athletes. Each team is split into partnerships that pair team members with a student who has learning disabilities.
Shaler hockey season ends
The Titans hockey program missed the PIHL Class AA playoffs for the first time in three seasons after a Feb. 11 loss to Armstrong.
Shaler had a 1-0 lead against the Riverhawks after a second-period goal from Adam Baginski. The Titans couldn’t make it stand.
The Titans (2-13-0-2) needed to win their last two games for a chance to make the postseason. Shaler snapped an 11-game losing streak by scoring a 2-1 win over Moon on Jan. 31 at Baierl Ice Complex.
Scarberry hits 100 wins
Shaler 138-pound senior Ian Scarberry became the second Titans wrestler this season to hit the 100-win mark in late January at the Sharon duals.
Scarberry is a three-time WPIAL qualifier and placed third in the section tournament last season.
Fellow senior Ryan Sullivan reached the mark earlier in the season. The Section 3-AAA individual championships were last weekend at Fox Chapel.
Indoor track sets records
Mayah Charity set the Titans record in the 60-meter dash during the Tri-State Track Coaches Association No. 4 meet at Edinboro. Charity came in with a time of 8.17 seconds, clipping the previous mark of 8.24, which was set by Tori Soeder in 2014.
Dalton Kalbaugh set a Shaler record in the 3,000 by coming in with a time of 9:00.36, besting his school record by four seconds.
Swimmers swept by P-T
The Titans had a tough time last Tuesday in Harrison City, losing 89-86 in the boys meet and dropping the girls meet 96-79.
Shaler’s losses followed a strong performance against Gateway. The Titans girls, who are 8-4, saw Lydia Nebiolo, Olivia Dibon, Jenna Stanton and Isabella Cerone qualify for WPIALs in the 200-yard medley relay. Stanton also hit a qualifying time in the 50 freestyle.
Shaler’s boys, who are 9-3, saw Justin Adametz qualify for WPIALs in the 100 butterfly against Gateway.
