South Hills notebook: Brentwood baseball secures playoff berth

Notebook items from around the South Hills:
• Easton Klein, a senior pitcher/shortstop, and Austin Veatch, a senior center fielder, served as captains for Brentwood's baseball team in its first-round WPIAL Class 2A playoff game against Chartiers-Houston.
The Spartans played nine games in 12 days at the end of the regular season, winning seven times to secure their playoff berth.
• Baldwin graduate Sean Kealey is a left-handed sophomore pitcher in the Allegheny College baseball program.
Kealey is an economics major with a planned career as a financial analyst
At Baldwin, he was a member of the National Honor Society and CYO basketball program. He also served as a Baldwin youth baseball camp volunteer.
• Former Baldwin baseball coach Dan Caponi is an assistant coach in the Mt. Lebanon baseball program.
• Thomas Jefferson graduate Jen Johnson is a junior jumping specialist in the Allegheny College women's track and field program.
Johnson is a biochemistry major with a managerial economics minor. She was a two-sport athlete at TJ, earning two letters in soccer and four in track and field.
She was a four-time WPIAL championship qualifier in the triple jump and high jump events, and set school records in the high jump (5-1) and triple jump (34-4).
• Former Brentwood assistant football coach Casey Phillips coaches two sports at Mt. Lebanon.
Phillips, a Baldwin graduate, is head coach of Mt. Lebanon's softball team, and an assistant in the football program.
• The Thomas Jefferson baseball team did not qualify for the WPIAL playoffs in Class 5A, but the Jaguars ended the season with an 11-4 nonsection win at New Castle.
Thomas Jefferson finished 3-11 in section play and 6-14 overall.
• A pair of Baldwin graduates are members of spring sports teams at La Roche College.
Christian Hirt is a junior infielder in the baseball program, while Shawn McDanel is a freshman midfielder in the men's lacrosse program.
• Among the sophomores in the Brentwood softball program this season were girls with a first name of Kylie (Hammond), Kayla (Kacsuta), Kaylie (March) and Carly (Vickless).
