Notebook items from around the South Hills:
• Thomas Jefferson’s girls soccer team clinched a WPIAL playoff berth as the fourth-place team in Section 3-3A.
The Jaguars ended up with a 6-6 section record and finished the regular season 8-10 overall.
The TJ girls wrapped up the regular season with convincing wins over Baldwin, 3-0; West Mifflin, 6-0; and Elizabeth Forward, 8-1.
“We have had an up-and-down season,” TJ coach Jason Vozar said. “However, I feel we are peaking at the right time. Winning the last three games was huge for us, and allowing only one goal in the three games is what I am so pleased with.
“Our expectations for the playoffs are to play solid defense and see what happens. If we do that, we have a shot to make some noise.”
TJ was sparked by goals by junior midfielder Dalaney Ranallo, junior defender Mia Maksin and freshman midfielder Hailey Krawczayk against Baldwin.
Ranallo and junior defender Alaina Mulvihill netted two goals apiece against West Mifflin. Maksin and senior forward Bella Sestito chipped in with one.
In the regular-season finale against EF, Ranallo and Sestito racked up hat tricks, and were complemented by goals from freshman midfielder Elana Kondos and freshman forward Bella Blosl.
Sophomore Maddison Sippey was the Jaguars’ starting goalkeeper in all three contests.
• Brentwood junior QB John Milcic tossed five touchdown passes in his team’s 34-21 conference win Oct. 12 on the road against Carlynton.
Five players caught passes for the Spartans, led by sophomore RB Aiden Wardzinski, senior WR Drew Wilson and junior WR Jayneil Latham with three apiece. Two other juniors, WR Eddie Gomez and RB Ian Thomas, had two receptions.
Wilson (2), Latham, Gomez and Thomas nabbed touchdown passes.
• Both soccer teams at Thomas Jefferson qualified for the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs, as did both teams at Seton LaSalle in Class A.
The TJ boys drew the 12th seed; the TJ girls were seeded 13th. The Seton boys were awarded the third seed; the Seton girls were seeded fourth.
Brentwood’s boys team also qualified for the Class A playoffs. The Spartans landed the No. 7 seed
• Baldwin’s Riley Lenard, a talented junior right-side hitter, wears uniform No. 1 during her team’s volleyball matches.
“There is no reason for being No. 1,” Lenard said. “I chose it at random.”
• Alec Troy, one of 10 freshman on the Brentwood football team, is the son of Brentwood Mayor Dennis Troy, and the grandson of Herb E. Troy.
The gridiron at the Brentwood Stadium complex is named Herb E. Troy Memorial Field.
• Four players in the TJ girls volleyball program have the first name of Julia — Micklo, Fiedor, Putignano and Palmer.
Micklo and Fiedor are senior defensive specialists; Putignano is a junior defensive specialist. Palmer is a freshman outside hitter.
• Baldwin’s homecoming king and queen this year were Pary Herrara, a senior lineman on the football team, and Paige Ernst, a senior cheerleader.
