Notebook items from around the South Hills:

• Seniors Tanner Wells, DeAngelo Brisco, Evan Vickless and Austin Veatch served as captains for the Brentwood football team in its first game of the season against Carrick in Week Zero.

Vickless (RB/DB) registered the first touchdown of the season for the Spartans, racing to a 27-yard second-quarter score.

Brisco (OL/DT) accounted for the Spartans' first sack, while senior Michael Folino (FB/LB) corralled the first interception.

Senior QB Michael Trent passed for 266 yards and four touchdowns against Carrick, completing 15 of 24 aerials. Veatch scored twice in a span of 28 seconds on 16- and 58-yard TD receptions.

• Brentwood has 34 players listed on its team roster this season; Carrick had 17 players in uniform against the Spartans.

• The Baldwin girls soccer team is a member of Section 2 in Class AAAA again this season.

The four playoff qualifiers in the section last year were Canon-McMillan, Upper St. Clair, Peters Township and Mt. Lebanon. C-M finished as a WPIAL runner-up and PIAA champion.

“We have a very tough section schedule with the realigned classifications,” Baldwin coach Kelly Shoplik said. “I expect us to compete with all the (section) teams and make the postseason.”

• A pair of 3-on-3 basketball tournaments for boys and girls in fifth to eighth grade will be held Sept. 4 (Labor Day) at Seton-La Salle.

The boys' tournament will take place from 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., followed by the girls tournament from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.

The registration deadline is Sept. 2. For more details, email Mark Walsh at coachmrwalsh@gmail.com or Ian Barrett at bpga2011@gmail.com.

• There are 59 players listed on the Baldwin football roster.

Some of the biggest players on the squad include Jason DePretis (6-1, 285), Charles Harris (6-1, 275), Lucas Perfetti (6-0, 275), Bradley Friedman (6-3, 260), Harrison Merlo (5-11, 260), Noah Bartic (5-11, 260), Nate McNally (5-11, 250), Mike Badstibner (6-0, 240) and Harry DePetro (5-11, 240), among others.

• Baldwin's Loran Cooley is one of four new head coaches in the Class 5A Allegheny Nine football conference, joining Tim Bostard at Woodland Hills; Dan Knause at Chartiers Valley; and Ryan Linn at Moon.

• Baldwin graduate Maddi Sgattoni, a 5-foot-10 freshman outside hitter at Navy, was tabbed as the Patriot League Rookie of the Week in women's volleyball.

Sgattoni earned the honor based on her performance at the Kristen Dickmann Invitational last weekend.

• Casey Phillips, former assistant football coach at Brentwood, is serving as an assistant coach at Mt. Lebanon this season.
