South Hills sports notebook: Thomas Jefferson hockey earns key victory over North Allegheny

The Thomas Jefferson hockey team ended the month of November with a 3-2 win over North Allegheny in the PIHL Class 3A division.

Senior forwards Owen Michael and Gavin Salopek and sophomore forward Garrett Fetzko scored goals for the Jaguars. Michael’s goal was on a power play.

TJ senior forward Cam Lorenzi and senior defenseman Jacob Simon each were credited with two assists and junior forward Lucas Blose had one.

Ben Balducci was the winning goaltender with 19 saves.

TJ improved to 5-3 to trail Seneca Valley, Peters Township, Central Catholic and North Allegheny in the 3A standings.

The Jaguars’ team leaders offensively included Blose with seven goals and 11 assists, Lorenzi (7 goals, 5 assists), junior forward Michael Burns (6 goals, 5 assists) and Simon (3 goals, 7 assists).

Balducci, a senior, was 5-3 with a 3.23 goals-against average, .850 save percentage and one shutout.

Baldwin’s Quallich honored

Baldwin junior Michael Quallich has been selected to the inaugural Team Pennsylvania, a new junior golf development program in the state.

The Western Pennsylvania Golf Association announced that 12 boys and 12 girls will participate in the program (ages 13-18) which is geared toward opening doors for aspiring pro and college talent through opportunistic and financial aid means.

Among the players selected are two-time PIAA champions Carson Kittsley of Fox Chapel and Mya Morgan of Elizabeth Forward, Jack Sacriponte of Latrobe, two-time WPIAL champion Alyssa Zhang of Shady Side Academy, and others.

The top two boys in the points standings will earn an exemption into the 2026 Sunnehanna Amateur at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown.

Scott Nye, who is Merion Golf Club’s Director of Championships, is the captain of Team Pennsylvania.

Quallich will represent South Hills Country Club.

Allemang also was a three-time NCAA Division I qualifier during his college career at Duquesne, where as a senior heavyweight he broke the school record for single-season victories.
