Rising sophomore quarterback Anthony Smith is leaving Southmoreland after a record-breaking first season.

Smith, who became the second freshman in WPIAL history to pass for more than 2,000 yards last fall, has enrolled at Seton LaSalle.

He was with the Rebels on Wednesday for a 7-on-7 workout at Woodland Hills.

His father, Ron, said the move is not for athletic intent and believes it puts his son in a “safer” environment where he can succeed.

“It is for his safety and well-being,” Ron Smith said, not divulging details. “We want him to have a good high school experience. We wanted to stay. I’m a Southmoreland guy and have a lot of friends here. But we needed to put him in a better place where he is more comfortable.”

Smith (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) has NCAA Division I offers from Syracuse and Sacramento State, with more likely on the way.

Last season, he completed 129 of 244 passes for a school-record 2,110 yards and 22 touchdowns. QB Hit List ranks Smith as the No. 1 quarterback in Pennsylvania and No. 14 nationally for the Class of 2028.

Jaivin Peel of Western Beaver is the other 2,000-yard freshman passer. He threw for 2,434 yards in 2023.
