It was senior night at Southmoreland on Friday, but Stanley Chapman stole the show, blocking a school-record three punts to lead the Scotties to a 38-0 win over Greensburg Salem.
Southmoreland held Greensburg Salem without a yard on the first series and took over on their own 49 after a punt.
Consecutive 13-yard runs by Averyon Darnell and Dawson Wolfe and a 20-yard Darnell run got the Scotties to the 16 before a pass from Wolfe to Ty Whoric moved the ball to the 9.
Darnell scored from the 1 two plays later, and Liam Smith’s kick made it 7-0.
Two series later, Chapman blocked a Greensburg Salem punt and the Scotties took over at the Lions’ 41.
But the Lions’ Noah Dudek recovered a fumble at the Greensburg Salem 30 to stop the drive.
Chapman blocked another punt at the Golden Lions’ 32 several plays later.
The Scotties scored in three plays, with Darnell going the final 21 yards to the end zone, and Smith’s kick made it 14-0.
Greensburg Salem started its best drive from the Lions’ 12 with Brody Chismar scrambling to the 27. But Chapman blocked his third punt several plays later, recovered by Dan Busato to set up a 30-yard drive in three plays.
The Lions avoided punting on the next fourth down, and a Southmoreland stop set up a 53-yard scoring drive.
Wolfe’s 30-yard pass to Whoric on third down kept the drive going at the Lions’ 27.
Jackson Mickens’ fourth-down carry kept the drive alive at the 3, and Wolfe scored on a keeper for a 28-0 lead.
Southmoreland outgained Greensburg Salem, 179-60, in the first half.
It became a 35-0 game when Cam Lee returned the second-half kickoff 81 yards to the end zone. A 26-yard punt return by Makel Darnell set up a 21-yard drive that ended with a 25-yard field goal by Smith for a 38-0 lead.
Southmoreland had a yardage advantage of 221-84.
The victory set a school record at 9-1.
“We challenged them in February, and knew the kids knew how to win,” Southmoreland coach Dustin Shoaf said. “It’s as simple as going 1-0 each week. You do that, and you can stack a lot of wins.
“It’s really exciting to see our kids play all three phases of football. Our staff challenged them, and we challenged the culture.”
Shoaf said the loss to Elizabeth Forward did not define the season, and the team responded accordingly.
Shoaf praised the team, cheerleaders, band, community and administration for supporting the program this season.
Of Chapman’s punt blocks and Lee’s kickoff return, he said: “A lot of high schools don’t know how important special teams are.”
Shoaf said the playoffs offer “a whole new challenge, and we will get ready for next week.”
